Those SB basses put Carvin back on the map, and were excellent instruments. It was a used SB5000 that got me into Carvin in the first place and led to my buying many more. I always wondered what happened that the relationship with SB ended so abruptly.
I was really tempted to leave it this way for a while but my better half grumbled about the probability of her getting poked with a string end at one our jam sessions where she sings harmony vocals
. I seem to recall stories that something happened suddenly. Everything Sekou-related was scrubbed from Carvin's site and marketing and all that stuff in a very short amount of time. They were very well regarded basses at the time.
Yeah, I understand why there is some issues with the electronics on older Carvins. My stock preamp had the bass control around 80Hz and the mids at 160Hz, which was rather silly for general tonal adjustments! A cap and resistor swap (found here on TB) had the mids up to 500Hz. I have no issues with the tones, and this sounds good in passive mode, too, though I play it active pretty much all the time.
