The Best Compliment Ever.

Other nice compliments I've gotten

from a 60 year old jazz cat who played with miles: "this kid, he's something else, he could be the next jaco"
from anthony wellington: "les claypool better watch out!"
from victor wooten: "you have an excellent sense of time"
from matt till: "I actually listen to your music"

Great stuff...

I remember after I got my first bass I started playing right off with a friend of a friend who was on guitar. I could barely play a scale to save my life and maybe a year or so later I wasn't much better (technically)... One time I was discussing bass playing with him and I said I was trying to get some better technique, and he said "you know, the thing about you is... I know all the flashy technique stuff will come with time, but man, i've played with alot of bass players, and there's just something about when you play basslines... it's like you're really playing them man, like you really mean it"... That was a great complement, and meant alot to me at the time.

A year or so after that I was playing in a community college jazz band. I was a music theory student but performing jazz was completely new to me, I was fumbling my way through songs and charts like the total beginner I was. Our instructor/band leader happened to be a world class bass player herself (which was great, she always had a great ear for what I was playing which helped alot, and there was no 'faking it' in front of her). Anyway, I remember we were working on playing ahead of the beat/behind the beat and she said "you know, you have by far the best sense of time of any student i've ever worked with"... That was really nice as well.

Like alot of people I try to stay humble and always err on the side of modesty when it comes to my own ability, as that mindset seems to lead to more growth than the opposite, but times like the above it's really nice to be able to take a step back for a second and say "hey, that feels great" and take some pride in yourself...

I think I'll wait until at least the second practice before I start stealing band-mates girlfriends. ;)

Just make sure you name your bass this girl's name. So when you talk to your bandmates you can say, "Eh, I can't go drinking with you guys tonight, I've gotta stay home and practice with *insert name here* on my bed."

or

"I think I'll go home and slap *name* for a while, or I might try fingering some new parts for a little bit."

:p

Where did I state I was Teh anything?! I just really liked the concept of this thread until it turned into an episode of Beavis and Butthead. Lets just say I'm a big emo kid sometimes, and I got a Mr. Holland's Opus kind of vibe from the first post. I love music and can't imagine being deaf, and I thought it was really sweet that a deaf person loved the bass because she could feel the music. I didn't think, "Oh man dude, if she sat on my cab, it would totally shake her naughty bits... I'm such a pimp."

And I didn't say losers... but there are a lot of kids on this forum. I was stating that the main reason most of the posts here are so childish is because there are so many children on this forum (People under 18). I just have always hated "locker room talk," and don't see why it's permitted.

Now I guess I'll go ride off into the sunset on my high horse and do whatever...

So I just started getting a band together with some guys from my college. We had a practice at their apartment tonight and were playin alot of blues and funk stuff. One of the girls that was at the apartment was deaf. They introduced me to her after practice. This is when she gives me the best compliment ever: "Your basslines feel really great." :bassist:

Just thought I would share another one of the great reasons to play bass.

wow, very cool. That would mean so much more to me than the "You Rawk Dooooode" that you usually hear.
