Dan's pedalboard is pretty minimal. Live he doesn't use an octaver or anything. On some recordings you can hear an octaver, but others he plays a little bass on. I've got thier discography, but couldn't name a single disc to start out with. My favorite has long been The Big Come Up, but Rubber Factory has really been growing on me. My best friend's favorite is thickfreakness, which also is very good. I'd recommend one of those three over Chulahoma, to start out with. And if you ever get the chance to see them live, DO IT!!
They're pretty good actually. I like the minimalist setup, when everyone is solid (aka no Meg Whites). These guys do it right.
I hate to seem like a jerk, but this music is terrible. There's already way too much minimal music out there for me to find this even remotely interesting. It's really vapid music. And I'm not one who gets off on Dream Theater-esque fast scales, I just like music that's thoughtful and has some significance and this music has neither. More bravado than significance or creativity.
Love Rubber Factory. Try also another two piece band called "Death from Above 1979." The drummer sings and the bass player plays a Ric through a bunch of amps and effects. Great RnR!
I really like them...sometimes...and dislike them others. I am rarely in the mood for that music, but when I am, it's really good. I only got into them because my girlfriend forced me to listen to them, and they have grown on me. Decent band, but I think a good bassist could do them good, but if he doesn't do it right it would hurt them. Better safe than sorry I suppose.
I don't know much about the Black Keys but I heard a few of their tracks and they sounded pretty good. I think the drummer's left-handed, but he sets up his kit as if he were right-handed so he has some cool fills.
I'm sorry, but I can't stand DFA 1979. Aside from the fact that I think their music's boring (I admit I was pretty into it when I first heard them, but 3 months down the line it was dull as all hell), they're huge tools. They played at my school and pulled the whole hipster rockstar attitude, increased their lameness 10 fold.
As far as two-pieces go, and bass-drum two pieces, you can do a lot better than DFA 1979.
