Most of my basses are cheap (less than $150). My latest aquisition which I'm really digging is my $89 OLP... $90 if you include the price of the used leather strap.

I recently scored a 1 pickup Epi SG or EBO.I once owned the Gibson EBO and sold it(I sold it 20 years ago and just missed a chance to get it back)When I was in High School the Gibson SG was a popular axe and I always liked the look.Whenever I see a Epi SG bass I usually buy it and they usally let me down,I got lucky because the one I got now seems fine and yeh I would use it on a gig.I would take it in bad weather or rough areas but fact is this one here is a fine instrument,the one I had before sucked.I cant count the Gibson as a cheapy but the Epi copies are.Another cheepy I liked was a Hamer Slammer.It looked like a sunburst les paul jr and was great for the buck and a quarter it costed.The yamaha cheepies are also nice.I dont try and buy cheap most of my stuff isnt cheep but sometimes a cheap guitar looks good and if it sounds and feels nice hey what the heck,I have also had good luck with cheaper Ibanez bass's.Now you got me going.Im gonna surf Daddys site for cheepies

This Rogue is one of the worst basses I ever saw.
The strings on it were worth more than the bass.
It was free.
I had an old MIM pup, some pots and stuff here

I bought a new plastic nut for $3.50 and after a
lot of work made a nice fretless bass out of it,

My $100 SX SPJ-62 I paid off with one gig. Bought it used. According to my incomplete gig database it's been on stage 100 times or so.
Not that I'm having fun with a Fender Highway One Precision just now.
i'm all about solid low end to mid grade gear. i've built my whole studio around that concept. i think there's a place for high end precision gear. but my garage is not that place. having a $2,000+ instrument in there would just make me paranoid that it's gonna get bumped, dinged or scratched. i'd really prefer to enjoy playing my instruments rather than have art pieces that will cause me to worry about ruining their value.

Bit of deoxit on the input jack
Clean the fretboard, new strings, lower the action (you could have driven a bus under the strings the way it was set up), truss rod setup, intonation.
Good as new.
All that ... for $50!
It sounds great, it feels great, and I'm happy with it.

I play a 2005 Warwick Rockbass Corvette. It sounds pretty crappy, the build is questionable and the parts, oh the parts.... But I'm happy though, I got her for FREE!!!!

I prefer the bass that feels and sounds best without worrying about the cost. I recently bought a Vintage Icon Jaco bass for $350 (new, on sale) and it feels and sounds great. It is currently in rotation with an American Jazz, Rickenbacker and MusicMan.

my epi thunderbird was the first one to get me to look at things that way. It amazes me how well the "cheap" basses actually play.
I started playing on a low end ibanez, always felt like I needed something better, fancier, more expensive. went that route, then came back to my senses.

Cort doesn't get enough appreciation around here IMHO. I've been spiffing up & tweaking my son's Cort this evening. Good sounding and playing for under $200 and it weighs less than 8lbs. It's been a few years since I bought it for him and don't remember exactly how much I paid. It looks much nicer than this in natural light:
