Maybe I just see this different. I dont have a problem with investing money into Gods cause. Where I start to question, is when people decide that it's not right to be spending all this money on things to enhance worship, and to make the worship experience just that much better, and they go get into their Mercedes and drive off the their $500,000+ home with a pool, and 5 cars and a boat, and.....well, you get the idea. If we dont sacrifice for our Lord, it really doesnt matter how much we give. It's a lot like the widows mite story. Again, I think that we should support the work as best we can, and not skimp on it if we are not willing to skimp in our own life in order to support His missives.

Delight in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.

I don't see a problem with owning a couple of nice basses and rig. Especially if you are using them for worship. Even the mustang is fine as long as you aren't bowing down to it and worshipping it. I do think sometimes, I put a little too much importance on the music and gear. But I also have commitments of my time and money to help the poor. Could I do more? Yes. Should we all sell all our posessions and give the money to the poor? Maybe. But I think if we all end up standing on the corner naked with no place to go.... maybe we crossed a line.

Of course you also have the promise that the more you give, the more He blesses you. And because you can never out give God, it would seem that standing naked on the corner would be the least of your concerns. But I do get your point, and I believe the point He made about selling all you have and following Him was more about not clinging to anything of this world and clinging to Him. Anything that I cant let go of, I'm putting in line in front of God. And one of the commandments says not to have anything before Him.

As a newbie to the board, i will step carefully here...

First, CapnSanswich, your avatar really freaks me out too. lol

RE: the church, it's mission and it's methods.

I will say that i'm not a fan of the big fancy buildings that seem to be the new trend (10 or 15 years now). However, my concern isn't so much with that as it is with what is going on inside these churches. I'm 45 and i've been in church almost my whole life. I come from an Assemblies of God background, so that will give you some flavor of my theology. My concern is that so many of the big churches have become huge money makers for the preachers that own them.

I think that the big churches have changed the culture that we had in churches in a bad way. We have lost a lot of the family feeling that was a cornerstone to the church 30 years ago.

That said, the 450 person church I attend can not do NEAR the outreach that Lincoln Brewster's church of 18k can (the church he is worship leader in is about 50 minutes from me). We don't have near the quality of outreach either.

My heart is for reaching the lost, so when i look at this argument, I see lots of negatives in the big money stuff, but I also see a lot of COOL stuff being done to reach the lost that costs big $$$. Bayside of Granite Bay is one church doing that.

maybe it all comes down to a heart issue? And maybe i need to worry about the beam in my own eye. (speaking for myself, not meaning to offend anyone).

I might even go a little further (I usually do) to say that too many churches "have a plan" and run their ministry like a business. At my old church we had/have some very successful social programs; a Friday night program for families, a Saturday program for kids, a soup kitchen, a thrift store. It has been my experience that when you stop giving away trinkets, these people stop coming. What they got was not "living water". We had a “pastor” instruct us not to get “all Jesus” on them or they might not come back. No kidding. No surprise that none of these programs have born much fruit. Now our men’s study and women’s study and couple’s study have all been fruitful.
I am not against planning but I have seen a bunch of churches that do not seem to trust God enough to just preach The Word and allow God to do the rest. This idea that He needs our help and without us, how could He possibly get people into the church shows a lack of faith, IMHO. My theory is that if you are staying true to The Word, God will get the people there who need to hear it. People will travel pretty far to get a good consistent filling of The Spirit. People will eventually find other things to do if the only thing they get from the service was a really swell song.
For me, this comes back around to worship teams versus Christian bands. Worship versus entertainment.
If someone's salvation is dependant on your rhythm section, I would suggest that they have bigger problems as does your church.
I do not have the figures here but if anyone is interested, do a search on the number of people who “convert” during one of those “Harvest Crusades” versus the figures that the local churches report of new attendees after the crusade leaves. Conversions based upon emotions of the moment are not often fruitful. Those types of converts are the same folks who are often easily be led away to then next new thing, still hungering for something new and shiny to keep their attention.
I am not saying that music cannot be a tool to help draw people to Christ but I do not think that it is good theology. I was not saved by music. I do not know anyone who was. Of course I don’t know everyone! I play on the WT to enable people, to hopefully help them prepare for the message. I jam on Saturday nights for myself.
Again, I think that the music program of any church is very important and a ministry but I also feel that it is not the most important thing and should only be there to enhance what is important.
Of course I could be wrong.

PS. Am I preachy or what!?

Oh c'mon guys. It's just the Hoff sporting his St. Patties Day look without a shirt on. It'll be gone by Monday. I'll have something up there a little less freakish but for now let's just enjoy our Irish heritage, if you're Irish that is. You can't get any cooler than Knight Rider wearing a leprechaun hat can you?:D

I agree with this. The way I see it is that the flesh will attract but the Spirit draws. If we're easily attracted then we're also easily distracted but if we're drawn then He's got us.

Just no hamburger vids, mmkay? :D

9MM Mike: I think I couldn't have said it any better myself.
Cap'n Sandwich: I agree with your terms too. :D
MJLuke; SparkyB; 1BUBA: YIKES!!! It freaked me out too. But I caught on to his "Holiday" idea for an Avatar..not being Irish-I feel for ya laddies!!! :hyper

Now let's go out there and play some BASS!!!

:D

Thanks Brothers!
I have a jam this weekend. I am working on some James Gang stuff for the lads to jam over. Time to blow off some steam. I wonder if I can work Funk #49 into Sunday’s service. LOL
By the way, I am working on a lesson for Sunday's small group on the Illegal Trial(s) of Christ (they wanted a Lenten-theme so I thought I'd try something a little different). It is NOT going smoothly for me. I could use all y'all's help. I covet any prayers you can send my way!

I'll be sending them to our Lord bro... anything specific...?

Thanks for lifting me up. It is already helping. I am working on a list of questions for each of the six "trials". I am trying to have enough to take them from the arrest to the final "trial" with Pilate. I can't type as fast as it's coming. I LOVE when this happens!
If I get the rough draft done by tomorrow afternoon, the evening jam will be terrific (like a celebration) as I won't feel like I am shirking my responsibility to the group and, of course, to God. I want to include as much OT prophecy for this event as I can find as well, Psalm 55:12-14 for Judas.
Time for a quick bass-break!
Thanks again my brothers (and sisters too!).
