The Christian Praise and Worship Band Bassists Club Part 4

Now for some drama....
We had a new drummer start last Sunday. He practiced with us the week before that and was invited to play last Sunday. He quit via email that afternoon.
It would seem that our tendency to be Spirit-led with regards to changing the set list or the keys of the songs Sunday AM, just prior to service did not fit well into his more ordered life.
I can see where changing the key of a song might really mess up a drummer.
I too prefer to rehearse things the way we are going to play them, but understand we do need to be flexible.

Hey guys, I need some prayer.

I'm not a regular poster, but a regular reader and I appreciate the encouragement I get from this thread.

We found out today that my wife has a malignant form of skin cancer that *might* have spread into her lymph nodes. The doctors are unsure at this point and are taking precautionary steps to diagnose anything and everything early.

Please pray that God would send his Spirit to be amongst us to comfort us and to heal my wife should there be anything very wrong here.

Peace and blessings...

XavidmanX, Prayers are coming in. I have a sample getting biopsied now but I don't think it's cancerous (but what do I know). I'm praying for her.

Guys and gals....

We may want to refer to post #319 in this thread. I think we're supposed to only keep the discussion in this thread about the aspect of playing P&W. I don't agree with this as a brother needs our help, but the rules are the rules :hmm: and in fairness, TB is probably the best board I've been on for all my hobbies.

I'd hate to see us shut down. Just sayin'... :hmm:

To add my 0.02.. I have been playing worship for the last 15 years or so, and just moved to Florida late last year. I Just auditioned at my new church, and somehow made the cut! I feel very blessed to play with a very talented group of musicians and singers; we rotate around for 4 services (2 saturday, 2 sunday) and are gearing up for an Easter special right now. We play hillsong-style music for the most part, although we mix in other "stuff" too. :)

Well sign me up! I just started playing the bass again and playing in our praise team at church as well. I have been back playing for about 6 months now and on the team for about 3 months. My father is a pastor and I started playing the bass on stage when I was 11. I played on the praise team from the time I was 11 until I was 18. I started turning from God when I was about 16. Living the double life. I finally quit when I was 18 and started running. Gave up the bass completely. I came back to Christ about 3 years ago. We moved to west texas about 2 years ago and God has been dealing with me on playing again ever since. It took me a while because of the things I associated with playing... But I am back and just in time... Our praise team is in a healing/transition/growing season.

I have a similiar story. I just picked up playing again last year after swearing it off for 15 years. I think God was trying to tell me he gave me the gift (or maybe the drive?) to play. I may have used it in the past for the wrong reasons, but I realized it didn't mean I couldn't do some good with it now. :)

Welcome aboard, Gumby hands out numbers when he has a bit of free time.

My group needs everyones prayers. Terrible sound system, mediocre singers, 1 hour practice a week as a group, poor organization, I can go on, we need help!!!!!!
Welcome to playing in church. IME this situation is the rule, not the exception.

I played in my church's band for 3.5 years under these conditions, and finally just recently stepped down because I was exhausted from biting my tongue and restraining myself from blowing up in frustration.

If God has called you to play, play. Recognize that the situation may never improve. If you're in God's will He'll bless you and others for your service.

Looks like that was me. I've sent an apology, and apologize here. just wasn't thinking.

Wanted to ask everybody here:

1. Is anyone here the Bass player AND the worship leader?

2. If so, do you tend to gravitate towards a particular style or certain songs that enhance your playing more than ordinary? (Perhaps a preference of the songs on the list.)

I have played bass and lead worship only once. I chose songs that were generally easy. Whenever I have played guitar and lead, it hasn't mattered much. I don't feel like I gear myself towards a particular style...I just play songs I like and measure the level of difficulty on a scale 1-10. (That is, if I introduce the song to the band).

As far as playing songs I don't like, I try to enjoy how I am playing as opposed to the song I am playing sometimes. That's not what I prefer, except for I can't STAND OLD AND WORN OUT SONGS!!! Now, P&W songs aren't meant to be "considered old" but I know when I have worn out a song. We tend to do a lot of that from time to time. I really think some tunes should be used like sugar-SPARINGLY!

What say you?

Hey gang I'm officially turning the number assignment gig over to 9mmMike.

When I first took over the number assignment gig I was under the impression that the founder would return and take the task back. That will not happen. I also honestly thought this thread would die after a couple of months. Glad to be wrong about that.

Two things have lead me to this decision. First, my job. Work has become 24/7. Yes, I could quit but then I would join the ranks of the terminally unemployed. Can't afford that.

Second, music is no longer a joy, it's become a second job. I need to throttle back on all things music. My faith is as strong as ever but I don't feel led to pursue music as I once did. As of now I'm cutting back to my first band and my work at a rescue mission. Everything else is done.

I have enjoyed the discussions on this thread. You are a fantastic group of people and enjoyed being a part of this little slice of the Talkbass forum.

9mmMike is a great guy and I know that he will do a great job.

Until the trumpet sounds.......

Thanks Gumby4. I will try to live up to your praise. Thanks for all the time you put in here. We all appreciate it. God bless you and all the Kingdom Work that you are doing.
Do drop in from time to time to make sure we're behaving. Hopefully we'll catch you at a "local" gig sometime this year.
Mike

Thanks Gumby. Take it easy, and I hope life starts to even out soon!

When I wrote that I was going back and forth between guitar and bass as the song needed it. I'm a bass player that plays guitar and you can hear it in my playing. I was not having a good time. The next week, a guitar player walked in and joined the band. Now we got some tone deaf singers to deal with, one being the team leader/pastor's wife. As for the guitar player, we were cut from the same mold, heavy metal background, excessive partyers, got burned out then called to duty. We are having a blast. We figured one day, the pastor said "We're starting a choir. If you want to sing, come up and grab a mic." Wanting to sing and being able to sing are two different things. I want to sing but I'm awful so I avoid mic's. These people are awful but they were there long before I came along.

Just got home from the Rock & Worship Road Show. Wow, what a night!
Addison Road opened up followed by Tenth Avenue North (both Fenders, it appeared) then Hawk Nelson. Their bassist played a Fender Jaguar. Looked and sounded incredible. Very tight for a three-piece band! Jeremy Camp then played (another Fender bassist) and the final was Mercy Me. Their bassist used what looked like a stark white Thunderbird but the headstock looked like Fender...??!!!! Great basslines. In concert they absolutely rock it.

Incredible night of sound and worship. 100 miles to get back home, but very worth the staying-up-past-my-bedtime! :)
