The Christian Praise and Worship Band Bassists Club Part 4

Been a really rough week for me personally and spiritually. :(

Of course my head was in the wrong place this morning but the congregation was rockin like crazy. Funny what the Lord puts in peoples ears even when i/we feel off or down.

I've found myself continually praying for those in our body that don't want to be there. Not sure why this has been on my heart or mind ...anyone find themselves praying for random people/things?

I have had times when I've played when I felt lousy - spiritually and/or physically - and done a fine job, whether I knew it or not. I tend to go on "Autopilot" when that happens, and just try to roll with the flow.

Hey gang,

Thought I stop by and say Hi. The last two months have been a whirlwind. I've had the last week off from work and I'm just starting to get caught up.

My work schedule has been brutal but I did get a sweet deal at the beginning of June. That should take some pressure off for the summer.

Getting back in the gig mode.

My band has a gig this weekend in Staten Island. We will be at the New Hope Café this Saturday night at 8:00 PM.

The address is 1031 Castleton Ave, Staten Island NY 10310.

Would love to see you there.

Take care and God Bless.

I'd love to, but the traffic from central AZ to Staten is a bear! :)

Glad to hear from you!

Clarkster, Mine is a bit beyond well used. It was water damaged a couple of years ago, and because it still works and plays just like it always has I've decided to keep it as is (it's got serious MOJO, I've been told). The finish is coming off of the edges of the headstock almost completely, every screw has good-sized blooms of rust, and the jack plate and bridge have some serious surface rust / corrosion. The thing sounds really vintage, stays in tune, has really low action and intonates almost perfectly as it sits right now. It just looks really neglected. I know this is desirable (even to me) but still have my reservations. Oh yeah, I think every bass I've seen played at my church so far was a Fender. So there's that, too.

Thanks guys, keep 'em coming!

Call it character. Must be a good bass to sustain all that damage and still sound good. Post a picture for fun.

So we had one of the best weekends of music in ages this past weekend. It was basically my band (linked in my signature) with an additional guitar player who is one of the best I've ever played with, a great cello player, keys, and Invalid Link Removed joined us as one of the vocalists.

Everyone was firing on all cylinders; my bass and amp sounded especially good this weekend. You know how every once in a while things just aren't quite sounding right... maybe the strings are a bit too old, or you just can't dial in the EQ... well it was the complete opposite this weekend! The drummer and I were totally locked, the extra guitarist is a smokin' hot blues player who was just plain fun to listen to...

It was pretty cool playing with Geoff; he's a very cool and laid-back musician, had a great story to tell about his family (which worked great with the message which was about parents stepping up and being good parents), and he sang some good songs.

So I'm curious... how many of y'all's churches try to choose worship music that dovetails with the message? I'm on staff at my church and help program the weekends, and we try to choose music that works well with where the teaching pastor wants to go. Beyond simply having a special song to tie a bow on the message (which we definitely do some times), we try to choose worship tunes that are about certain aspects of God that will get the congregation thinking in the same direction as the pastor wants to teach; so part of the band's role (along with videos or dramas we produce) is essentially to prepare hearts and minds to hear what God will say through the teaching of our pastors.

So do y'all have weekend services that are totally planned out and "packaged" like ours, or are worship and teaching basically completely separate?

Our music selection is always inspired by either the message (we generally work sequentially through the Bible) or the Psalm reading (also sequential) that day.
I would not say (not even close actually) "totally planned out" though! LOL.
In fact, our last song (which closes the service) is often not chosen until the message/lesson has started to play out and the WT leader is lead to something specific.
Our Sunday AM practice is very, ah, "fluid" in terms of song selection.
But certainly the songs reflect the message or the scripture upon which the message is based.

See post #890 in this very thread for pics. And for an update...

The output jack was crackling and needed to be looked at, so I actually took all of the hardware off a couple of days ago (after pics were taken of course, I'll get some more up soon) and cleaned the thing up. As promised, I didn't touch the bridge, but I scrubbed all of the loose rust off and wiped everything down. I gingerly tried to remove some of the corrosion from the tuners and jack plate, but it's pretty stubborn so it's pretty much the same. I think the dull rust looks better than the stuff that would stain everything it touched!

While it was apart, I cleaned the pots and jack, reset action and intonation and it's playing even better! I'm hesitant to change the strings right now, so that will wait until after the audition. I put the current strings on in about 1994. They're totally dead but part of the sound for now (and they stay in tune), so they stay for just a bit longer.

Anyway, I've been practicing like crazy and trying to get back in the habit of playing as much as possible. If they don't choose me to play with them, it's not because I didn't know the song! My audition is tomorrow, so I'll let you guys know how it turns out.

Hey guys, new to the forum and would like to be a part of this group! I thought TB was totally cool-nothin' but bass players. And now Christian bass players to boot. Praise God! I'm 48 and have been saved for 12 years and have been involved on worship teams for 11 of those.

Tommy,
You're gonna do great at your audition tomorrow!

talk to you guys later,
Joe

Just wanted to drop in and say hi to everyone...hope everyone's been doing good.

(Of course, I am sure you're all doing good...you're all BASS PLAYERS!)

Just wanted to drop a question: Anyone here have any experience playing any old school Christian Rock? (A la Stryper, Bloodgood, Guardian, etc.)

Please let me know! :D

I've been trying to slip in Daniel Amos' "I love you #19", but alas, our WL isn't much for the good old stuff :(

We have played Jesus is the Rock (and He Rolls my Blues Away)... simple walking bassline in E and You're Gonna Have to Serve Somebody and we rocked em both!

I've never played one of those songs in a band as a bassist but some people think that our singer from Wayfarer's Journey sounds like the guy from Petra. IMO he sounds like Steve Perry from Journey but our music sounds like Kansas, Rush, or Yes. We get comments from people who think we have an 80's prog rock sound, which I can see their point. It's too bad the sound clips on our myspace page don't have any vocals on it yet.

Listening to "Believe It" now... yeah, the piano bridge has "Cheyenne Anthem" all over it! Love it, grew up on Livgren and Kansas!
