The cure for G.A.S.

I've found this to be so true. I was about to totally swap out my rig, and then I sat down and play with it for a long time and it just sounded so good I remembered why I bought it in the first place. G.A.S. ELIMINATED.

Now if I could have defeated my bass G.A.S. and not bought 2 basses in a week...:D

For me, GAS is waning rapidly with time for a few reasons. I've finally figured out that as long as the bass and rig are pretty good and well matched/ set up, the bass line will only sound as good as I'm able to play it. I've spent $$$ on light, good-sounding stuff to play out with, and that's done. I still have a case of overkillus maximus when it comes to my living room rig (Orange head and Epi210), simply 'cause I can't bear to eat half the cost, only to downgrade the tone. I'll move it when the time/trade is right. In terms of basses, I've only been playing 6 years and it took me 5 of them to settle on what works for me (32-35" fanned fret 5er for 95%, 34" parallel fretted 5er for solo/chordal wanking by the fire). That'll be done early in '08. Therefore my New Year's rez'll be less Talkbass surfing, more bass playing. My approach to the TB classifieds will be the way I decided to react to mail order catalogs several years ago-I don't look at them unless I know I need/want a specific item beforehand. Shopper's high is a bad reason (but common impetus)to browse. Lastly, when I get the impulse to buy, I force myself to wait a couple of weeks and that takes care of most of the spur of the moment idiocy I'm capable of.

It's gonna be a spankin' great '08!

I thought I had my GAS cured on the guitar side of the playing spectrum. Now that I have started on bass, it is worse than ever. I have spent a while pondering the etiology of the said syndrome. Part of the whole affair is sheer availability of gear through Internet. The other part is growing up spending all your pocket money on lower-level necessities - bicycle, C-cassette radio, essential vinyl LPs, stuff like this. Now that I have stable income and no house mortgage any more it is so much easier to commit on insanely expensive deals that you might have not given a second thought over a few years back. The reference price floor keeps rising on stuff to buy... The third aspect for me, especially on bass is the insecurity that results from the realization how little I know about bass in general, and how few things I can do with the instrument. Getting top notch gear is a way to compensate the innate lack of musicianship in me. Sadly, in the next few days I will post my latest acquisitions that are arriving by the end of the week. The gear names start with Agu... G & ... Marsh... !?!

I let go that Marshall tube amp deal I was GASing for today - and got a Markbass Little Mark II instead. Should have it tomorrow. I hope my GASing is little by little over, for now. Or, do I need a matching cab for the Aguilar 2x12 now that I have the wattage??? :hmm:

Some good ideas here but store auditions really haven't worked for me in practice. In addition to TomBowlus's caveat regarding limited offerings outside of a few urban centers there's the concept of what works on the gig vs in the store. My experience has been that the pretty sounding rigs in the store get lost in the mix on stage. My current rig works great on the gig but doesn't sound that good by itself. Also, I don't have time to haul all my stuff around to several stores to A/B a bunch of stuff.
