Regarded as the first true British punk single released(their first album as well; beat the Pistols in both formats). “Neat Neat Neat” was a kicker as well.
"Is she really going out with him" is apparently a tribute to The Shangri-Las - Leader of the Pack. And New Rose was a metaphor for the new music genre in the mid 70's, Punk Rock. When the Ramones toured the UK for the first time in 1976, that's when Brian James knew for for sure something new was happening.

Yeah, it’s a wiseass quote from that girl group classic, but also a nod to the New York Dolls(a big influence on British punk)doing the same thing years earlier, with the “When I Say I’m In Love…” quip from the Shang’s “Give Him A Great Big Kiss” before their “Looking For A Kiss”. The Dolls also threw in Mickey and Sylvia’s “How Do You Call Your Lover Boy” during “Trash”. Both bands having a sense of humor(and acknowledging earlier rock’n’roll)which was severely lacking in those days. But punk was always around in one form or another. The Damned did a cover of the MC5’s “Looking At You” on the first album.
