The Fender Super Bassman 300 thread

Last night my band opened up for Ultrabomb, which is Greg Norton from Husker Du's current band. We've been doing a cover of "Something I Learned Today" and asked if he would mind if we played it, and he graciously said yes. Sometimes it's cool to meet your heros!

Received multiple compliments on my tone, which was all the amp. My wampler ego compressor has been turned off for this band since our last record because I feel like it squashes the ratty/grindy sound the OD channel is giving me, which is my sound on the album. I am loving my current settings.

Very nice! 410 neo bass cab? Solely mic, or also blended with DI from the amp?

Yeah that's the 410 neo. First time a sound guy has mic'd it. I normally tell sound guys "hey I have a DI" and they use it, but I forgot to and before I could it was already mic'd so I didn't say anything. I think some sound guys look at the vintage styling and assume there is no DI on the back. Anyway, it sounded monsterous!

Anyone using the sb300 overdrive channel as a pedal platform? I've run my fuzz pedals into that channel without much success.

I've not run a fuzz through the amp, but I found that drive pedals through either channel didn't sound as good as the OD channel itself, so I stopped trying and just appreciate the drive it gives me. Are you trying to run the OD channel with OD + fuzz or clean + fuzz?

You could try putting the fuzz in the fx loop so it comes after the preamp and see how that sounds.

First time playing outside today! Sound guys were incredible so it sounded great in the crowd and the on stage mix was perfect.

Bass amp was back lined but I brought my Super Bassman and ran it through the Ampeg 810. Got the cab mic'd again this time and man I prefer this amp with a mic'd cab so much more than the DI!

The band before us were friends and also used my amp, and I got to hear it as an audience member. Just the perfect bass amp, I tell you what.

Hmmm ... That cab looks a bit short to be an 810, unless it's on a lower lower shelf below stage level. You sure it wasn't a 610? 🤔

Hah! I didn't realize how short it looked in the photos. The photos are being taken from the ground in front of the stage, which is about a 4-5' drop, which is making the band and that Vox (on a stand) look a lot taller than they are.

I didn't actually pay attention much to how tall it was when setting up, but my amp (on top of the cab + the Ampeg V6B) was taller than me, and I am 5'10". There is an outside chance it was a 610, but I think this is the backline amp from another venue I play sometimes and that is an 810. It will remain a mystery lol

I see daylight all the way thru between the cab and Ampeg head, indicating camera near that level. The markup indicates that level isn't more than about half your height, which I don't think is 810 height. Is the guitarist taller or shorter than you? He looks about same as you by this. Still looks like a 610 to me, unless sitting below stage level.

Guitarist is 5'5"

This was still bugging me so I was looking at the photos, and the amp is indeed below stage level. If you look at the bottom of the kick drum you can see that.

I'll buy that. The side handle on the 810 cab also looks too low for the cab bottom to be at stage level, too. Looks like the bottom 2x10"s are blasting out below the stage!?! 😵‍💫
