Double Bass The Fickle Beast

I have a "new to me" hand-carved 7/8 bass. I don’t know how to explain it, but for three rehearsals in a row (bass out of the basement level finished study, out to the cold car, twenty minutes to the rehearsal site, out into the cold to bring it in, out of the bag....) I have put the bow to the bass with the electronic tuner cranked up and, to my amazement, dead on with all four strings, and ready to go. No adjustments needed. Let’s play! Never saw anything like it.

Also, I have noticed an unbelievable resonance on low D when played on the A, as compared to the open D. I can feel the whole thing vibrate with this huge mellow sound. Have to tone it down when I play D that way.
