The first time I have heard Jaco really walk.

My favourite Jaco is probably the most un-Jaco track. His rendition of Fannie Mae.
You mean you've never heard the live rendition of Joni Mitchell's Dry Cleaner from Des Moines?
Maybe Jaco's last lucid period, he kills on this stuff.
I heard it, but I guess I was not paying attention.
To my ears, this Jaco sounding great being Jaco, not straight ahead walking.
That was great bass, Jaco with Metheny. Problem is I dislike Metheny's phrasing I don't think it swings.

I hear it as a very funky two style, as only Jaco could. He did the horn charts for that track too. Killer tune!
IT really is more Moses that is at fault there, needs swing from the ride cymbal Really sloppy sounding. Pat is doing horn lines not the expected Wes pr Joe Pass lines.
In jazz drummers affect soloist phrasing a lot. Gary Burton would have not hired Pat if he really can't swing.
I think you need to listen to it again. That is not a swing jazz tune. Funk. Jazz swing is always driven by a triplet feel on the ride and a high BPM where 180 is considered medium tempo.
Both Jaco and Metheny can be polarizing players, with unique styles but bigger stylistic ranges than they usually get credit for.
Back in the day, Metheny was the guy I associated with “Phase Dance” and that whole esthetic. I have since heard him live, sounding like a true jazz pioneer, playing like a modern Ornette Coleman on a guitar synth. Pretty rad stuff.
For Jaco, The Birthday Concert record is what opened my ears to how he was able to fit into different musical contexts. I love his sound on that album.

Check Out Pat Metheny's Question and Answer's with Roy Haines.. Better yet, see him live. Even when he was truly Solo, he'll drop a one Standard tune at least or a ballad. Guy has roots in straight ahead jazz and can swing. . Sorry to digress. I probably have 45 of his 52 albums. AND he reveres and deeply respects Jaco to the point that he says, it's futile to try to play like Jaco.
Trying we should! Expecting to succeed... well, just focus on the positives.
