The floating thumb (fretting one that is)

Alright...for some odd reason I enjoy to use my left thumb (my fretting one) to be used as a muting mechanism for the E string (and slightly the A) in order to make sure the slightest vibrations don't occur when I'm playing with a pick...since there is no "movable anchor" available.

I've gotten much better about it lately...but does this pose any serious health hazards or other problems? I got a jazz bass...which does have a slimmer neck...and i have fairly large hands so it never did bother...
