The Fretless Club (Part IV)

My Squier with some extras.

After a new record of only 18 months, I finally got this blasted body finished. Warmoth neck and a ebay body. It has approximately 346 coats of shellac. Only six or so of which remain. Once i decided to spray, I liked that way better than trying to wipe on even thin coats.

I can now put the Squier fretted P back together and entertain insulting offers on Facebook Marketplace, then decide to keep it anyway.

Mounting a P pickup from scratch was a bit of a surprise, and a pain. Output seems really low, might be the 250k pots i grabbed, or haphazard pickup height. (Did i mention that was a pain?)

Anyway, I love how it turned out, and looking forward to playing it once I have it all fine tuned.

Ric’s standard scale for the 4001/4003 series is 33 1/4”. They did a fretless version although it is not in production presently. Chris Brubeck plays a Ric fretless.

Ah true. Yeah a fretless Ric would be cool. Hard to find tho.
Here are some photos of the '04 4003FL I had for many years.

Forgot to add the side marker pic: Just two. I might eventually add 13/14 too.

Just the other day I tried out a fretless bass at a shop.
I quickly realised that I don't like lined fretless when they leave the side dots at the normal positions of a fretted neck. I use the side dots as a quick guide and just couldn't get my head around having to be in front of the dots.

Your post just reminded me I screwed up again intonating this neck. Warmoth default position for side dots on fretless is at the line. The 12 fret double dot though is in the middle, not at the front dot. No wonder I needed the short screws on the Hipshot bridge for the A string

Hey there fretless fans,

I need some new strings for my Thunderbuzz fretless. I’ve been using the strings that came from Pedulla for the Buzz basses, but those are no longer available since Mike closed up shop a couple of years ago. Can someone make a recommendation? I prefer something taper-core that will get me lots of sweet “mwah.”

Regards,
Wayne A. Pflughaupt

Well, that's just a really messed up way for doing dots. Reminder, never get a fretless Warmoth neck.

Straight from the horses mouth is always better than forming an opinion from random yahoos on internet.
Call em - they'll do a ton of stuff off menu. You can get definitely get no dots. I think you can have them do in between or on the line, but that's just some random internet yahoo talking and you should check - unless you're just looking for something to be mad about.

Side Dot Options

On Fretless bass necks, the side dots are positioned at the exact fret locations. On Lined Fretless necks, side dots are positioned between the fret lines.

To me it makes sense.
Dot markers right on the fret line and the 12th marker with double dots the 12th fret line is right between them.

I find the 1st fret really tough for some reason - maybe it's just a so much bigger, or maybe my board doesn't have any figuring in that part.
I do too, but actually find the 2nd fret position even more of an issue. I might get around to adding 1st and 2nd markers one day.

That makes more sense. I read the quoted post as the 12th-fret-position double dots being in between the 11th and 12th fret positions as would be the case for a fretted instrument. My bad.

Ah.... I can see what you were referring to now, and that would cause confusion.
Mine is a Warmoth and while the dots are on the lines (and the 12th double dots either side of the 12th line) they are really hard to see in low light. I may get a luthier to replace them and add a 1st and 2nd marker at the same time.

I was playing on the Warmoth website thinking about a reverse headstock fretless 5 string. I picked roasted Swamp Ash body, Zebrawood top, Tobacco burst paint job. Neck... Reverse tele 5 string, Goncalo Alves neck with Madagascar Ebony unlined fretboard. Got up to about $1400 and it scared me off. I love that Tobacco burst with the zebrawood. Thinking of all black hardware and a clear or translucent smoked pickguard.

Photoshop mock up. I was thinking Wenge neck with Ebony fretboard too. Fun to play and dream.

If I did something like this, I might order the body unpainted, roasted maple neck and find a piece of matching zebrawood laminate to put on the headstock. Then have the body and headstock pro painted by the same guy.
