The GHS Progressives thread

Am I the only one using these? They are on the brighter side of warm, almost as flexible as TI's, half the price, purple silk, and they last.

I absolutely love them. I was introduced to them by Pete Hanewinckel and haven't looked back. I have them on my G&L and my Ric and love them to death.

I found them to be a little too high tension for me (I normally use DR Sunbeams) but they sound and feel great. Definitely not your run of the mill, everyday string.

However, just for kicks I put the E string on my Warwick Streamer and I was quite surprised at how much louder and more robust the Progressive was than the Rotosound nickels I normally use on that bass. I'm now keeping that bass tuned down a half step, and with the higher tension of the Progressives I think they will be perfect for that tuned down bass.

However, let me ask you a question since you are familiar with them...assuming you are buying the 4 string sets...does your E string have the 'saddle hugger' tapers? This is the only reason I didn't keep the ones I have on my Warwick...the taper starts right where the string meets the saddle. If I can get non-tapered E strings I'll put them on my Warwick next time.

As a side note, Jason at bassstringsonline.com sells singles so you can build your own custom set with these. He put me a custom set together with a .135 B string which is phenomenal. I just couldn't find a home for them, I actually have them for sale in the Emporium right now

Yeah my E string has the saddle hugger taper. I like it, personally. It gives me some extra room for movement with my action.

BSO is the only place that sells custom sets of the progressives, so I'm shopping there from now on. I currently have a set of med-light progressives on my G&L with a .126 B string. Those strings brought new life to that bass.

I really like the sunbeams as well, great strings.

I like the saddle hugger too, if the taper were just 1/8" longer it would probably be fine for a Warwick! The taper was perfect for my Brubaker Brute, it's a nightmare to use non-tapered strings with that bridge, but Progressives slid right in there.

I'm actually using these as well. I bought a 4 string Spector from a guy on TB and had him install a set on it. Recieved the bass and I have to say I loved the strings! I ended up selling the bass though. I'm too used to a 5er as my main axe and missed the bigger neck.

I am planning on installing a set of progressives on the next 5er I get. Two are scheduled for delivery today, so we will see who gets the nod.

I have a custom set on my Warwick 6 string and really like them. They add a little more warmth to the bass, whereas the Super Steel Contact Cores I had on prior were very hi-fi and bright but a bit lacking in the lower end.

No problems here with the saddle huggers on the E and B string with the Warwick bridge. I actually cheated and called up the 'Wick NY guys and they sent me some extra saddles for the G string, and I'm using those for the saddle hugger strings; they help A LOT more than keeping the saddles normally used for the lower strings.

I put these on an ibanez srt800dx (100 E set) The tone reminds me of elixirs, but with a little more balls in the lows. Im surprised that in a couple of threads here, no one has mentioned how especially smooth feeling these are for a roundwound! The taper core E string sounds especially great. I wish they made a whole set tapered.

Since they reminded me of elixirs, I put a set on my Fender Jaguar (which sounds awesome with elixirs). Progressives also sound totally rad on my Jaguar. I get some of that chainsaw idling sound mixed into the growl.

I love these for fretless bass. They are the only strings that sounded good on my Modulus 6 string fretless. I also use the Progressive B string along with DR Hi Beams for the EADG strings on a couple of fretted basses because the DR B strings sound so dull & flat compared to the rest of the set.

I use GHS Progressives on my MIJ P bass. I was in an experimental mood and first bought them for no reason other than "let's see how these work" and I wound up liking them a lot.

The tension is on the stiffer side (not unplayable stiff) and that works for me because I use both fingers and a pick. Anything with looser tension while using a pick doesn't get it for me.

I really like the saddle hugger (exposed core) of the low E string, as I was able to really fine tune the height of the low E string. The other thing I noticed right away was how much bigger and fatter the low E string sounded with this set compared to the E on a set of Boomers and on a set of Lo Riders.
