Hello fellow bassists and friends,

I like many of you are in the market for a new bass.
Unlike many of you I am completely lost.

My price range: 700 smackers max.

I first started with leaning towards a G&L L2000 tribute. But i'm starting to get doubts so i thought i'd go to my brothers ( and sisters) for advice.

I really dig the tones of bands like Between the buried and me, The Dillinger escape plan, The Faceless, Tool.. ect. Really growly stuff.

I also play a lot of warm reggae style music. I enjoy playing a lot of complex chords as well. So i guess i'm looking for something with versatility but will be mostly playing heavy music.

Most of you probably know more then i do. Should i go with the tribby or is there more fish in the sea?

By the by, i'm a lefty so that might narrow your advice options.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you kindly.

Buy used not new!

For $700 you will have a lot of good choices. I think you might find a USA G&L for close to that price, or a USA Fender Jazz or Precision. Also, IMO Carvin makes some great basses, and resale on those is bad -- so you could get neck-through bass from them for less than $500.

Just my two cents' worth...

Sounds like the tribute L2000 might do the job. Should be able to get one used one under budget. Good luck!
