The Great Pickup Poll

Hey guys!

I'm a bit of a pickup freak and I thought it would be fun to find out what pickup configurations TB members use.

You can choose as many kinds as you'd like. All this is trying to find out is what kinds are being used or preferred by people on this board. Of course you are welcome to post pics of the basses you use with your preferred configurations. After all, that always gets everyone excited here.

On my Epiphone EBM-4 I installed Dimarzio P/J pickups to replace the stock ones. I ran them through the factory preamp and it sounds amazing. Tons of grit, growl, and straight up rock. This bass is very aggressive and really has no way of toning it down, which is exactly what I was looking for.

My Ibanez ATK has the stock triple coil pickup, which I just listed as a humbucker in the poll. Tons of versatility here. This bass can go from the growl that the Epiphone has, to mellow, to a slap monster at the flip of the three way switch and sometimes a small adjustment on the EQ.

And here's my old Univox 335 copy. I listed it as soapbars, because I can't tell if they're humbuckers on single coils when I take them apart. They have the single coil sound and signature hum, but under the covers are two coils. Whatever they are, they sound very clean, mellow, and woody, with tons of mids. This is my favorite bass, and I have another on the way that I just won on ebay that's in much better shape.

I mainly run single coil on my G&L L-1000, so I'll put it down as single coil, even though its a humbucker with options

Dual single coils run as a humbucker. It's on two of my favourite basses the Gus G3 fretless and the Burns Sonic. I also have a Lightwave.

I love J basses - with single coils.

I love P basses

And i've also dug the laklands that i've tried with the J/MM configuration.

But i only own J basses at the moment

Well, nice post for me since I just ordered a couple of wicked single coil Nordys NJ5F as replacement for my jazz....

Beside that,I have a Pentabuzz (likely soon to go) with double Bartolini in J configuration, a nice double humbucker Stingray 5 (what a pickup/preamp config) and I'm waiting for a Benavente with a triple J or slims, as Chris call it: 1 at the neck , 2 at the bridge... looking forward to playing it !

I have a Carvin 4 string with Carvin soapbars, a Tobias 6 string with Bartonlini soapbars, and a Wishbass 6 string on the way with a single Kent Armstrong Soapbar(?).

I would have thought so to bigger gruntier punchier single(split) with no hum, oh well, I guess it'll take a while to catch on

Yeah, I also thought that the P Split Coil would be the most popular but I guess the Jazz Single Coils are very common on many basses. I also think its more popular amongst bass makers to use the single coils rather than the split. If this were a Fender only poll then maybe we'd get different opinions.

Sorry guys, I forgot about Lightwave and Piezo pickups. I don't think I can amend the poll at this point so just choose others.

I have a single soapbar sweet spot style Modulus Quantum 6, dual soapbars on my Quantum 5 and my F Bass BN5, a single coil on my MIA P Bass and a P/JJ on my Thumb 'Dirty Blonde.'

Dual Dingwall FD-1 pickups. Definitely very modern and aggressive, but versatile.

Reverse P/MM on my Kinal, dual humbuckers/singles on my Skyline Hollowbody, dual reverse-P's (FD-3's) on my AB-1, and dual Darkstars on my LeCompte.
