Nobody will admit to it, but there was a French Baroque style of playing called notes inégales (unequal notes). After studying the concept in music theory class in college, I went in the next day before anyone else got there and wrote on the blackboard: notes inégales = swing. My theory professor immediately erased it. He was not amused. But it is true. There is nothing new in the world:

The second and final movement of Beethoven's final piano sonata (No 32) has a section with a very swing-like character. It is unlike anything else he composed. I love all of his sonatas, and this one is one of my favorites. It's the conclusion of a very long musical journey.
