What didn't you like about the Gretsch? I've got the short scale, black, G5442BDC Electromatic. One of my few still EADG, so I don't play it often. But I like it for a change.

I actually loved it, even in EADG, for some dumb reason it decided to have the frets pulled to go frettless...a total failure. I hated it. the local music store that did it told me the had no time to un-do it. a TB'er in AL bought it from me. in fact it ships this morning.

Sorry for the late response.
It works very well on my Fender Modern Player Starcaster. But, because it is short scale, it required a thicker B string than my long scale basses. I think it is a .135 flat wound.
Well... Being relatively new to playing any instrument and also new here.. I'm just about halfway through setting up and old Samick P bass in BEAD that will be using Power 5 EB.. Obviously just 4 of 5 strings.. I'll also be doing a double reverse P routing since I'm looking at this as more of a heavy metal tone.. Tempted to just series both sets and not add a volume... I'm swapping A500k pots and not 100% sure what cap value to use.. I got this Bass cheap already set up with BEAD because the tone pot cap was busted off solder 2a4731 it reads.. I'm not sure what gauge it has now but I'm guessing 130/95/70/45 or something since it's got no wraps on the heaviest and a black silk on the 1st... "D".. I'll set it up again properly later.. My first learning bass was the UBass.. Limited tone and use but lesson learned soft touch. So the PJ Vantage is EADG 45-95 EB... Peavey Raptor Plus with skinny top heavy bottoms drop c#.. SG with 7-38 Dunlop Billy Gibbons set for now only... As is the LP.. Yamaha acoustic has EXL110W nickel wound electrics a Humbucker an internal mic and 3 piezo pickups hidden inside it.. Otherwise I play an 8 string tenor ukulele and my little traveler acoustic.. And a mixto Cajon/Tam/shaker/cabasa... I'm currently building a Banjo style Bass as well but it's just for jokes.. Seriously was hard choice between power 5 slinky and BEAD bass boomers from GHS.. the string tension charts and the hex core sold me on the EB..
But I really want like 40lbs tension on my B string.. Like a 145/150... Looks like slack tension on most

Use flatwound strings if you want higher tension. Ernie Ball, Daddario and Roto flats are fairly bright.
Well yeah I want bright and higher tension however not just higher tension for sake of higher tension. My fretless will get chromes on E standard. But I'm thinking bright with heavy overtones and I'm not sure exactly.. I'm thinking heavy metal but wishing the EB had thicker B and E strings on wounds... But also I haven't found any decent Flatwound that were BEAD designed
Getting the itch to come back to this tuning haha. I recall that I quite enjoyed the Ernie Ball Cobalt flats on my Schecter as BEAD; I currently have Cobalt flats in EADG on it right now.

I recently bought a five-string to cover some songs in lower tunings. Although the bass is great, I’m not loving the wider fretboard and extra string. I’m glad to see this thread as I think BEAD might be the answer to my problem but I’m not sure how to go about it. Are there string sets specifically made for this tuning?
I think if you take the time to scan/read this thread you will be able to answer this as well as many other questions you have not yet considered. Happy hunting! And I agree with you... I prefer a std size neck vs a 5-er.
The thing that I’ve learned about reading through these long threads is that you guys always convince me to buy new gear... That’s why I skipped it but I think you’re right.
yes, you may have to modify or replace the nut on the bass if you want to use heavier gauge strings.
