When I was 16 and had scrounged up enough money to buy my first "real" bass, I had narrowed it down to a Black/Maple standard passive P bass, or the uber-sexy Precision Lyte Deluxe. I picked the one with the active preamp and more knobs, because that must make it better! I've since spent the last 20 years and who knows how much money fighting with that bass to get it to sound the way I want it to... like a Passive P bass. I have my passives in the stable now, and that bass sits in the case in the corner, sad, alone and unused. One of these days I'll get it back into playing shape... one of these days.

Over 22 years of playing it was a full circle for me. Starts playing: I only need a few...what do they do again? Mid career: Give me ALL the controls! Now: Yeah...I only need a few, but I understand them lol

That applies to amps and basses.
