The new Affinity Squier P/J

Unfortunately, mine has a partially stripped head on the truss rod. They must make them out of aluminum foil or something. The rest of the bass is good (got the metallic red), and I like it, but it just goes to show the quality is hit-and-miss on the Affinity series. I'm keeping it as a project bass. I'll probably eventually replace the neck, maybe with a fretless.

Truss rod hole isue seems to be not uncommon

As far as I can tell the rod itself is fine in mine, but the Allan/hex head stripped a little bit. The metal must be pretty soft for that to happen. It's not worth replacing the rod, so if it becomes totally stripped I'll eventually just swap out the neck for something better.

My sentiments exactly. I'm REALLY diggin my affinity. I've heard some people say that it may be hit or miss with the affinity line. I def hit. This is a fine bass. I still wish I knew exactly what kind of pups were in this thing though. Anyone??

I mean the trussrod here on the pic is after I enlarged the hole. Before it was really narrow so the allen key didn't engaged totally and messed up. just an access issue

I see now. I gave mine probably a little over a half turn, it needed it, and it turned just fine, no issues. Bummer on your end man.

What are you guys throwing in your affinitys as far as pups go if you are replacing them?

I recently plugged one of these into an SVT-CL and 810 at my GC and wow!!

Frggin thing sounds great! Edges were a little sharp but my setup guy can take care of that.

Overall for $180 you cant go wrong with this bad boy. I am going to pick one up soon.

Then i will have a trifecta of Ps!!

This is exactly what I did at my local GC. I played new p/j affinity and within 10 min I was sold. Came home with it. The newer ones are quite awesome. Great balance as well.

I tried one of these Affinity P/J basses at GC last night, and was really impressed. I've been wanting a Fender for sometime now, and of all the different Fender and Squier basses I played, this one seemed to fit for me, and played the best. Never thought I would say that abuot a Squire. The funny part is that I went in looking for a jazz bass - what I didn't realize is how pencil thin those necks are.

I echo the desire in this thread for an all Maple neck. The only other P/J Bass that fender makes in Black with a Maple neck is the American Deluxe Precision, and that one is nearly a whole paycheck for me. Has anyone verified the neck pocket dimensions on this Affinity? I'd like to try swapping the neck for an inexpensive all maple Mighty Mite or used Fender Precision neck. I was happy with the stock electronics, controls, and such so I would leave those the same.

I've had this bass for almost 2 weeks now, the neck/action was setup well from the factory, the pickup heights needed adjustment, the fret ends will need some filing they're a bit rough. The neck is just like the Jag Squire I had, a thin Jazz style with a smooth satin feel on the back. The stock strings were a surprise supposedly Fender 7250's, I bought the bass lightly used although the plastic wrapping was still intact on the pickguard & pickups so I swapped them out for new Roto rs66's & I missed the clarity of the original strings. The bass balances well & the stock pickups balance well when the heights are adjusted. The metallic red finish looks sharp.

Got it now for 8 month and playing in a band I heavyly modified it.

First the stock bridge jazz pickup was weak and noisy. One night I tried to play this pickup with my band, it was such a pity, I just never used it.

So I moved to an American DeLuxe Humbucker, that required routing:D

I always wanted to do it indeed, I bought this bass for that purpose but before filling the gap, I seriously thought about getting a conventional jazz pup.

No regret now, I get this thick sound and almost play both pickups together.

Now I feel the stock P pickup has nothing below A1. I play with bass all way up on my amp. There's and dramatic output gap between the low E1 and E2.
I'll get soon a Bill Lawrence PB1, I hope the vintage sound it supposed to give will bring this low end I miss. I hesitated with the renown Fender 62.

Any pup change in Affinity PJ ?

I plan in putting the new geezer butler EMG P/J's in my affinity. I think it'll really make it come to life. The pups were the only complaint I have about this bass. They're good for someone starting out but I know the sound I'm going for and the stock pups don't help in a live setting at all. Just a tad too thin for my tastes, well, the J pup anyway.

I was thinking the same thing as Gregmon79, I'll probably wait to hear at least a little positive feedback before purchasing the new passive EMG PJ Geezer set. The stock pickups balance well when adjusted but are pretty low output & not very inspiring. I have the P pickup screwed down almost as low as possible on the E string side & as high as possible towards the opposite end just to balance the E & A string output.

I just took delivery of a brand new Olympic white affinity PJ today. First impressions, WOW! This bass is sweet. For $180 I can't see getting anything better. The strings are awful, and the frets needed a bit of smoothing for some sharp edges, but after 15 minutes of work she plays and sounds great.

Set-up was spot on too, which really surprised me. The j pick-up sounds a bit thin/harsh to me, but I'm still figuring out how to use the PJ configuration. Regardless, even if I swap pickups I would still consider it a deal.

Does anyone know what model droptuner works for these? I want to get one and I'm thinkin the BT7 but Im not sure. Thanks

I brought the same things when I got mine. Now I must say, I bought this bass with clear intentions on modding the hell out it, and have so far. Just have to wait on those geezer EMG's to come through. But, off the store wall, it was and is a great bass. I have had trouble dialing in an inspirational tone with the stock pups due to the fact this is the first time I've owned a bass with a jazz pup in it but it still sounds pretty good for the price. Mine however did need a decent setup when I got it home and changed the lousy strings that had on it. But after about 15 min, it was all gravy. I cannot wait to get those EMG's in this puppy. I share your enthusiasm nogoodwithnames, killer bass at a killer price. Great for a beginner and even better for a seasoned bassist who likes to mod.
