I did a search and found this thread and I have to say, it sounds quite difficult to get the great results you guys are posting about. I am always thinking about ways to get better photographs without getting heavily invested in it.

The first thing to try is learning how best to use the natural and/or ambient lighting that is available.

Yes, that is what I always try to do and it always yields better results than trying to jimmy rig a poor-man's lighting setup. No lighboxes or umbrellas here! I have some cheapie Home Depot clamp lamps, but you need multiples to get anywhere near decent lighting.
