Very dark figured maple board. Not many of the early JOs have maple boards.

Some unusual features on this early 4-94 - input jack on top, no 'Lakland' on bridge

Metal neck plate - no battery compartment

Sweet neck

Nice! The one on the far left looks very similar to a Fender. I saw 'Yes' in concert on DTV and could not figure out what bass Chris Squire was playing on the newer Yes songs and it turned out to be a Lakland. Of course he played his traditional Rickenbacker on all the old tunes.

Haven't posted in this thread for a long while, as I've been undergoing a bit of a scaling down/rebuilding of the old collection. Now I've got to the stage where I have four basses, which can cover quite a lot of ground between them (mainly as they all have different types of strings on).

Here they are; first the '60s inspired pair (Tokai 'FrankenP' Link ... and Tokai Jazz Sound):

And now the '70s inspired duo (Fender Geddy Lee sig Jazz Bass and Sterling Ray34):

Each one has been modded to some extent and each one plays and sounds just great ! For now ... I'm content .

Hi Jim !

Actually, the Ray34 is surprisingly good to play (the matt lacquer makes it feel very smooth). In fact, I'm on record as saying that this is the 'best' 'Ray that I've ever owned . It weighs 9.8lbs, which is about average for a StingRay, but by no means the heaviest around .

If you're in the market for a well-priced 'Ray, I'd recommend taking a look at one.

Edit: I should perhaps also mention that mine has had a few 'upgrades' and is now non-standard. The tuners have been replaced with original MM ones and the pickup is a Nordstrand replacement - the original one has a fully rectangular casing without the 'groove' between the top screws, to rest your thumb on. Just in case you wondered .

Thanks Avalon. Untill recently I haven't played it in years, hence the grime that still needs to be cleaned off . They seem to be hard to find one sold on 'bay a couple of days ago for AU $2000!!
