Is that a de-fretted late '80s-early '90s American Standard J in the middle?
After the first few days if I feel the connection with my new bass and decide to hang on I like to give it a good cleaning and set up. This one took a bit longer than usual since I had to knock the gloss off the neck (I hate gloss necks) and tape off and polish the frets that had some oxidation and soak and scrub a very filthy fret board. I still need to replace most of the screws and the pickup bolts but they're much better than they were. The bass had a lot of wear and it's previous owner clearly didn't care about maintenance. But a little time and effort got it looking dang good and officially a keeper.
I put GHS Flats on it around Christmas time and it’s very smooth.
This era of Fender doesn’t get great Press but whilst it’s a heavy bass it balances well (no neck dive)
I thought I would sell it when I finally got a 2EQ Fretless Stingray but it’s still here getting played.

Well done. I like bass spa days. It's super relaxing and the bass that was always just about perfect gets more perfecterer.

I agree - early '90s saw a few great Fender basses including the A/S J, the Jazz+ and Fender-Kubicki Ex-Factor. I heavily modified mine. (see post above) The body & neck are the only original parts. I routed under the pg to lighten it, cut a pearl pg, replaced the Schaller standard F tuners w/same era deluxe tuners, installed Nordstrand NJ4 pu's and a Fender/Kubicki 9v pre. I stripped the red finish and had MJT do their relic magic in Burgundy Mist Metallic nitro. It gets played a lot.
Nostalgic and romantic from the 80's... With him I just got to the category 5-9 
Current state of my bass arsenal (with addition of some guitars)
I've been on a P bass quest and have narrowed it down to a Copper Penny American Performer P bass as the best of the lot (for me). It met all my requirements bar the nitro finish....which I just fixed. My number bass needs:
-carbon reinforcement rods (my basses often see hard use boats, stored in cold/hot vans, left under stage risers on multi day festivals etc. etc. I need a stable neck.
-Quality tuners. American Perf. tuners are top notch.
-Not a boat anchor. American Perf. is 8.4 pounds....nice!
-Price. Paid £540 ($731) used for a bass that saw some hard road use with a touring bass player. Fine by me as I really dislike poly finishes and the beat up poly finish made it an easy decision to do my own three tone sunburst finish in nitro which should age nicely and feel much better than poly.
Very pleased with this American Performer bass!

Absolutely! And the black PG, great choice!
Thanks! Looks great from about 15 feet away....any closer and not so much, but it should mojofy nicely and any imperfections don't really bother me. The fact is, the bass feels and plays fantastic!
