The one that got away!

My first bass was the same make, model, country of origin and colour. Mine was stolen. I found it in a pawn shop and was told that I could buy it from them at retail. I said how about charging the guy who stole it and let me buy it at the pawn price, they said no. I walked. Back then I was mad, now I am sad.

I had a MIM jazz bass, a 2007 I think, in Midnight Wine with a rosewood fretboard. I wish I still had it. It was the first bass I really bonded with. The stock bridge pickup was pretty weak, so a pair of Lindy Fralin single coils really brought it to life.

My plain maple (yes, you read that right) Alembic Series 1. It had the 5 piece maple/PH neck through, chambered PH body and plain maple facing front and rear. The clear coat had also crazed badly, and I was speaking to Susan at Alembic and she knew of a batch that had poor lacquer and offered a refinish for free as mine was one of the few that hadn't redone. As the bass was 25yo I thought it was a wonderful offer. I wasn't playing at the time and just decided one day to sell it. It was on ebay about an hour when I got the email that it had been BINed.

I also had a Kubicki Ex Factor that I took to a luthier, IIRC in Prestons in Sydney about 12 years back. The was a reverse red/black burst I was having refinished in white when I was involved in a bad motor vehicle accident and lost some memory. By the time I'd healed and realised it wasn't in storage with the others I'd lost track of him. I'd love that bass back.
Do you recall the S/N on your Kubicki?

Oh man... The one that got away, that I'd LOVE to be reunited with... is this custom Roscoe that was made for me. Ordered though my buddy Jong at Jivesound back in 2006. I wonder where it is.

Hoo-boy, do I have a "one that got away" story!

I scored a beautiful, used Fender-Japan Limited Edition "All-Black" JB62, delivered to me all the way from The Land Of The Rising Sun, for a very reasonable price. It checked off all the boxes…looks, feel and sound. Unfortunately, financial woes forced me to sell it to a fellow TB'er out of desperate need to pay bills and keep my car up and running.

@Iamblichus; It's been five years. If you still check in here, do you still have it?

The whole story is up on it's own thread, but I will say this…it's delivery-day was quite an adventure! ;)

If there is a "silver lining" to that great loss, it's that it spurred me on to build a parts-bass tribute to it, which turned out to be a most excellent bass, if I do say so myself. :smug:
