I wonder if anyone can provide some insight into what looks to be a very toothsome ride? Looks "factory," but has Michael ever offered this model with this option?

Welcome! Nice Buzz I am thinking that rapture is something someone modded...I've seen a few like that pop up every once in a while.

Looks more like a J2 modded to accept EMGs to me. Shame really...

Could be a regular single SB Rapture 5 with an extra pickup routed in. Either way..... yech.... not an EMG fan at all.

I don't think so about it being a single SB - the placement is wrong for that. I actually don't mind EMGs - just not in a Pedulla. It's like buying a Porsche but putting a Toyota or Mitsubishi engine in it.

On second glace, it does look like it probably started as a J2... unless it was a custom order. As for EMGs, I find them harsh and sterile.... and much prefer many others if a "hi fi" sound is desired.

I agree; EMGs & pre swapped for original Bart Js & pre. The Bart pre setup for 2 pups would be vol/pan/treble/bass, not vol/vol/bass/treble, as described. For a custom order, I doubt Michael would have fit the pups that way, w/their corners intersecting the edge of the pickguard; he'd have made a custom 'guard.

That bass is 10 min from me. Looks like a bass that hung in the Knoxville GC for a year plus. Had Bart jazz pups then.

Yeah, I'd bet it's a mod job of that bass.

The tuners are sealed, so I opened the back to discover that a couple of the teeth on the gear had actually broken, something I've never seen happen. I spent about 45 minutes devising ways to make it work out anyway, including forcing the gear forward while maintaining string tension, and cutting the string very short as to require less tightening, but to no avail. The bass is unplayable.

Pedulla has been closed for the past few days so I haven't been able to talk to anyone. Online, however, they appear to only sell the tuners in sets of five for an extremely steep ~$150 (especially considering one just totally failed on me), which seems like an unnecessary waste of money when I only need one. I don't have a warranty because I bought the instrument used from Sam Ash. It's been well-cared for over the last two years in my ownership.

Questions:

1. Has anyone ever heard of this happening?

2. Is there any way to easily replace ONLY the gear in the tuning machine? If so, where might I acquire the part?

3. Does anyone have (or know someone with) an extra tuning machine for a Pedulla Thunderbass they'd be willing to sell to me? Preferably gold, but I'm desperate.

4. Do you think there's any chance of a Genz-Benz like customer service experience where they let me just buy one piece?

Any help at all is much appreciated.

I think its worth a shot asking them if you can buy just one. I'm not sure if they get them in set or something and thats why they sell them that way though? They have always been great to deal with them when I have talked with them. If not, I'm sure you can buy a tuner from whoever their supplier is (gotoh perhaps?)

One question. The bart preamp in this died a while ago and was replaced with suhr 3 band (bass knob is now stacked bass/treble). Previous owner says it gave it a more open bright sound, but if it turns out I would like to try some other pres what might you have experience with? Anybody switched out their barts on a rapture j?

I was at GC yesterday and they had this model bass, with rosewood board next to a benevente. both used and the pedulla blew it away. The benevente was GORGEOUS with the most impressive flame maple board I have seen and the lowest action I have played, but maybe the battery was dying because it was so weak and thin compared to the rapture. The rapture played just as well and I think the little bit higher action helped with sustain and in general beefiness, but for $1500 less only a fool or a collector would buy the bene vs pedulla! So happy to be here! Can you tell?
