I hope this post finds you well. I have had a bit of trouble recently with my Pedulla ET5 Thunderbass. To comply with TB rules (no pics/no bass) here are some photos of the beast:

Here is the issue: What can I do to get this bass to sound more "open" and less compressed? It is particularly noticeable with the 'Thunderguts' engaged. The 'compressed' sound tends to go away with brand new strings and also when the treble is boosted slightly or bridge pickup is favored slightly. It sounds slightly compressed when not amplified as well, especially compared with the other two basses I use regularly.
Background details:
1. Stock electronics, powered with Duracell batteries (fresh)
2. Strings = DR Hi Beams, 45-65-85-105-125
3. Amplifier = Acoustic Image Clarus II Series iii OR Ampeg B-15N Portaflex (amp only); all settings on AI Clarus FLAT
4. Speaker = Schroeder 1210L (also used for the Ampeg Portaflex); Tweeter at 50% (adjustment knob for tweeter 50%)
5. I typically play all of my basses flat & a 50/50 blend between pickups (exception - see above)
My other basses sound very airy and open, both acoustically and when amplified (G&L L2500 and Peavey Cirrus 6). I'm not enough of an idiot to compare the three, since scale length, materials, style of construction, etc. are all different... Don't get me wrong - the Pedulla sounds excellent. It has a very focused sound - perhaps too focused? I'm just looking for a way to make this bass an absolute No. 1 instead of being tied with a few others.
Here are my questions, and for which I seek advice:
1. Is this inherrent to the construction/woods in the bass (cocobola top, bubinga stringers, maple neck / body, ebony fingerboard)?
2. Is the 'compressed' sound inherrent to Bartolini pickups and preamp, particularly with the mid-boosting thunderguts engaged?
3. A matter of plucking too hard? The "effect" is not noticed during lighter plucking, although this is typically not in a live environment, i.e., at home on the couch with more control, etc.
4. As simple as turning the thunderguts off? I like the thunderguts due to the ballsy-ness it adds to the bass, but I can simply turn up the volume.
5. Do I need to replace the pickups / preamp? This isn't commonly done with Pedullas - yes, I've searched TB & the web diligently. If so, what are the recommendations? After reading the Fodera thread, the common recommendation is single coil pickups instead of humbuckers for an open / airy sound.
6. Does any of this make sense, or is it something you've encountered before?
7. Would this effect change with different strings? I've always had excellent experiences with DR strings on all of my basses. I can't exactly pinpoint it to a single string, either.

Maybe I can help a little with Chebass88 sound. Since I use Bart's in all my basses and for many years now I can tell you that your tone will be dark. Bart's are not known for there mid range and treble range but can produce a warmer tone. I suggest you look into changing the pickups to something else if you need a brighter sound. I play Gospel so I need the lows and warm tone that I get from Bart's. Hope this help. You can get them to sound tinny if you roll off the bass and add mid's around 800-900 hz and increase you treble.

After a few hours with RodneyAT and Envincibal's old T-bolt, here are my thoughts:

1. Beautiful. The figuring in the cocobolo is breath-taking. The BEM fingerboard is also amazing.
2. I've never owned a Maple-necked bass before - Every once in a while, I get a little confused when looking at the board. That's what practice is for. The dots *could* be a little larger...
3. I need to play this on several gigs and many hours of practicing before it is "mine". It is difficult to describe, but you know when a bass is "yours" when taking it out of a case and it is like meeting up with an old friend. This also involves wearing the finish on the back of the neck or a bit of oil.
4. It was interesting playing this bass & my T-bass back to back. My T-bass definitely sounds compressed relative to the aggressiveness of the T-bolt. Though I set them up similarly (business card worth relief at 7th fret, all strings 7/64th at last fret), they are completely different animals. That is a very neat feature - identical form factors, with different sounds. Someday when I have an entire day free & two brand-new sets of strings, I will restring them and set them up identically for more of an accurate comparison. **I know they will be different - there are at least 4 variables that are different (neck attachment, fingerboard wood, bridge type, and neck construction (2 piece vs. 5 piece), just a bit of fun.
5. Most of the playing was done acoustically, as it was too late to fire up an amp. I particularly like the bright, aggressive tone. I definitely need further analysis, and I'm looking forward to playing it through my AI Clarus II / Schroeder 1210L. I've only used my Ampeg B-15N into the 1210L.
6. Wooden knobs & tuners. I'd like to install wooden knobs and tuner keys. I have Bubinga ones on my T-bass. I'm thinking BEM. Any thoughts? (Now to begin saving some extra cash to get these...)

The color difference between hard & soft maple (used for the bodies & necks, respectively) is marked. My new TBolt has the same thing - the back of the neck is much brighter in color than the body, though both are maple. Interesting.
