I would love to try one but it's not one of those things that you'd just order online. That being said I'd like something that allows me to grab a bass and play beyond just being at the desk.

I would love to try one but it's not one of those things that you'd just order online. That being said I'd like something that allows me to grab a bass and play beyond just being at the desk.
I don't find the Balans chair to be good for playing an instrument. It seems awkward with guitar or bass and would be ok for keyboards, except that your legs are not positioned to use a foot pedal.
I agree about wanting to try it out. Back when I got my first one in the 1980's, we had a local shop specializing in Scandinavian furnishings. That couple are no longer around and running a business.

This guy manages to play bass while sitting on a regular desk chair. He leans forward but tucks his bass against the arm rest. Maybe this is Billy's secret! On a long session, it's nice to be able to fall back against the rest from time to time.
I know this is a way old thread, but does anyone know if a support tor playing electric bass, like there is for guitarists, exists?

My DAW table is a little higher so I picked up an adjustable architects chair, it's similar to this one. The arms do fold up but I find it not really the best for playing and keep a couple of industrial stools (like from the Auto Parts counter, one is actually from NAPA) with padded cloth covers in the studio. My DAW table has adjustable height, so the adjustable drafting chair works well (and I can raise the table if I want to work standing, really helps when adding a part). Mine has a number of adjustments and is really heavy duty, it just has similar look.

Use whatever feels comfortable and fits your budget. Don't buy a chair with arms if you're going to record bass while sitting in the chair as arms get in the way. However, some high-end chairs will let you swivel the arms out of the way so that's OK if you've got $1000 to spend on the chair.
IMO that is about as good as it gets! No arms and height adjustable and decent lumbar support. Let me add, proper strap adjustment helps a lot as well.
Taking a pauper's approach to this subject, I found this solid oak chair for $5 at a local thrift store yesterday - did a complete disassembly/reassembly to reglue and repair some splits last night - primed and painted it today to add a guitarist’s chair to the music room. Very comfy…a $23.49 total investment.

I haven't been in a studio since 2016 , but I've never recorded my Bass sitting down on anything .
