The PRACTICE Journal

Just finished. Two hours for trying to straighten out a melody I heard in my head and thinking about the possible chords to back them up. This song is far from being finished though. Then forty-five minutes to practice some songs that we'll be playing tomorrow for a gig.

I almost didn't do the practice because I was already sleepy, but I glad I did it. I felt good with what I came up for a bass solo part.

No bass again but played with the guitar and voice.

This morning, I recorded the song that I was writing on guitar within five minutes and sent it to our guitarist. He suggested some chord changes for two of the chords that I thought.

Tonight, I tried his suggestions and it seems to fit the melody. I also practiced singing (with the guitar) since I'd be sending a recording of a composition to my jazz-leaning band the next week or so.

Overall, the practice session tonight lasted for around one and a half hour.

No bass practice again, although I will be having a jam session with my funk band tomorrow night for three hours. I think it's either we'll be practicing the same set list that we played last Thursday or continue writing some original tunes.

I spent my time on the composition again. I wrote the chords on iReal Pro while waiting for the laundry. I also tried the preprogrammed beats.

Then while walking home, I heard in my head some revisions to the melody. So tonight, I tried that one out and tried figuring out the chords again. All in all I think it took one hour. I also practiced along iReal Pro.

Feel free to post your practice log here: when you practiced and for how long and any notes you'd like to record!
Never used one, although I can see the advantages. Generally speaking I never kept a journal of any sort. My thought is if you have to refer to the past to figure out what needs to be done in the current, one didn’t learn much from past experience.

That said, when it comes to music, I can’t remember every note I’ve played but have found that listening (recording) to my work is is a much more specific reminder of what need to be done.

oh cool thanks for those observations. fwiw that's not how i use a journal.

anyways this thread is indeed a practice journal, it's not really for discussing the merits of journaling.

Just tried to practice, everything sounded out of tune. String to string was especially bad. My only guess is that the high humidity today caused my intonation to shift.

I took my tuner to the fretted notes to see what was happening, and weirdly what sounded flat to my ear was showing up sharp on the tuner. Maybe my ear is just off today.
