The Praise and Worship Band Bassists Club

Tech/Programmer humor...:D Are there more of us in here???
We are moving from Oracle app builder to Java and Groovy/Grails. In a Java class right now. The change is pretty intense for me. Praying that I can learn this as we upgrade away from outdated Oracle forms.

A former IBM/COBOL/JCL/Oracle/DB2/SQL/Stored Procedure mainframe guy here. Did some Java & .Net before I retired in 2015. If you guys/gals shopped at Macy's, then it was by what I did there that made it possible for Macy's brands to hit the shelves.

So, are you a hired professional musician? Why does the church do such an audition process?
My guess is that if the church is so large that they have more musicians than they can utilize then going the professional route is the only fair way to administer playing opportunities. However the OP stated they had just reached the size which demanded auditions. My guess the MoM usually deals with pros or maybe all school district all-star bands as a secular musician/ band director.

I got permission to try my own bass at our next practice. Going to use this one assuming all my parts arrive in time.

This is Nausau Blue, which is closer to what I wanted but still not quite there. It's got a mighty mite neck coming to replace the original that was used for a fret less conversion. (As in, the original I butchered by pulling all he frets out of). I will be matching the headstock to the body.

I've got the white pearl pickguard I showed earlier on it and a red tort pickguard coming in the mail. I've also ordered some block inlay stickers because I'm a sucker for block inlays.

I thought about replacing the original bridge but for now I just gave it a really good scrubbing, it's a lot shinier without 18 years of accumulated grime. Same with the tuners, the 18yo Gotohs seem to work pretty well so far.

Strap locks arrived and will be installed shortly, I'm just waiting for the paint to outgas.

Pickups are Seymour Duncan quarter pounders through a passive series/parallel, volume, volume, 10 way varitone.

I ordered a custom string gauge of stainless diaddario strings. I plan on tuning this DADGB for now. Strings I ordered are as close to equal tension as I could get, around 40 pounds per string.

My idea with this tuning is that it will be the same as a six string guitar in drop d minus the high e string. I'd like to get into more melodic playing and the high b string will help with that. I'm currently working on Bach's cello suite #1 and this tuning will make it fairly easy to play (I transcribed the tab I bought of it into something a lot easier as it was very poorly written, the same note played three times in a row on different strings instead of just three times in the same position, 2-7 runs instead of just moving up a string, etc.) low D is the lowest I generally go anyway so I'm not losing anything on the low end, and I'm gaining familiar chord shapes.

I played last Sunday--although I wasn't scheduled to do so--but we had a farewell for our pastor after the service--he & his family are moving away and it was an emotional service.
Kind of tough at spots to keep playing when you see people in tears.
The family is pretty much loved by all--and I am sure everybody will miss at least one member of that family--if not all of them.

After the service we had a going away meal with a mini talent show--I played bass along with some others on a blues song (based on Little Walter's version of Last Night)
It was tough to play that as well--but it went over quite well.

But... What is hip?
Tell me, tell me, if you think you know.
What is hip?
If you're really hip,
The passing years will show.
You're into a hip trip.
Maybe hipper than hip.
What is hip?

Hippness is, what it is!
One of my favorite songs to play! :bassist:

"Political correctness" is just a lame attempt at thought-policing and to stifle free speech. I am SO not PC... :rollno:
Well said Comrade!!! Liberal social engineering and thought control and emotion/feeling farming and snowflake nurturing. Hope I didn't miss anything.

We all, or most of us, get nervous before we have to 'perform', not play, in front of folk critiquing us. It's a normal thing to get nervous/have butterflies, and you have to find out what works best for you to get over it. So, put yourself in that situation often so that you can find what works best for you.
Yeah, when I auditioned a long time ago at the church I consider my home church, but have never played st but would love to, it was similar. I almost went into panic attack. Started sweating like a fiend. Played parts of it really well, but I was SO NERVOUS. I've never reacted like that before or after. They did the play along with the KB player, who wrote one of the songs I picked(of which, all of the choices were originals from the church), with everyone crowded around me, some singing. Then, one of the WL's jumped on drums and played some very rockish beats and I was to play random along to that. Then they asked me if I played with a pick and I said NO then the drumming WL commented how smooth my bass sounded, "kinda like a fretless". I had my PentaBuzz(lined fretless) and I showed him my fingerboard, then he asked me if that was my main bass, which I answered YES, but I have others. End of audition.

Almost everyone, to this date, plays the house bass, a Fender Sting early P bass model, with a pick! One of the Associate Pastors occasionally plays there with his Am. Dlx. Jazz 5. I'd love to play there. Bethel style, 10-15 minute songs, lots of spontaneous stuff. Heck, I'd love to just sit in the back with my bass and headphones and play my bass just for myself and the Lord!
