The Praise and Worship Band Bassists Club

Ha!! I’m glad I wasn’t saying anything bad about anyone! Have we met before?

I was playing for something at Mt Zion Church in Arlington last Saturday and at Centreville Baptist Church last Sunday. Off this weekend - Praise God! Playing for National Prayer Gathering at Lincoln Memorial next Saturday, then MBC on Sunday.
Wow! I had no idea that you were playing at so many places.

Yes, we met at MBC after one of the services.

What effects (if any) did you use?

I typically run a B7k ultra with a little dirt. Compressor would’ve probably been all. I tune of the octaves a touch sharp and the other a touch flat. That “chorus” effect and overdrive are really nice on some songs. I’m generally of the belief that a 12 needs OD and/or distortion.

Israel Houghton's version of "Trading My Sorrows" from about 2001. The Bass intro - OH THE INSANITY!!!!! I believe this is the Terrance Palmer on Electric Bass.

One of the tracks from Israel's "New Season" album, and yes that is Terrance Palmer. His bass work is smoking on the whole album...my favorite is the squeaky-tight pocket and groove he and the drummer pull off on the title track.

Testimony time...
Have had health rollercoaster since my surgery Aug. 7th. Set off by pulmonary embolism discovered on the 10th. Treatment for that has kicked my butt...
--3 week course of one dose of blood thinner - got through but with breathing issues intermittent throughout
--Stepdown dose of same-- breathing issues more prominent-- allergic reaction. Switch to new blood thinner...
--ER trip with heart palpitations. CT reveals clots gone, but docs still want me on prevention course for 3 months. 4 days later, urgent care run with allergic reaction. Given steroids to counteract and told to stay on thinner until doc can switch. Evening dose eats right through steroid in the middle of C1 CR practice, back to the ER I go. More steroids, blood thinner switched to SHOTS (I hate needles with a passion).
--Last night, practically no sleep as body has shock response and some abdominal pains return that I haven't felt in weeks.

--Tonight, God used me anyway. Was at primary care earlier and she told me to take Benadryl to help knock out, so I did, got a couple more hours of sleep. Felt -just- functional enough to play CR service. WL had me pray between songs...and I just laid it out there, the struggle I've been having in my faith through all this, just one thing beating me down after another lately...prayed for myself and others feeling the same.
A young man came up afterward and said how much my prayer hit home for him. We had extended conversation, which blessed us both further.

God used my pain and suffering to reach someone else...and also rewarded me for my faithful service to C1 CR through thick and thin...the leadership crew got me a cake and flowers and a card to send me off as this was my last night to serve before the move. I can't describe how much that moved me...I've enjoyed serving there so much, that was blessing enough. Didn't feel like I deserved to be loved on, but got it anyway.

Thank You Jesus.

It always amazes me when I think of how little the choice of bass, strings, pedals, cabling, etc. really matter. Lots of dollars invested, and hardly any of the true sound of the instrument is heard in too many cases. Most of the investment is in what we hear and feel. Which we feel makes us play better.

I'm realizing the same thing in the last few months - even if you spend lots of $$ on gear, it's not going to make too much of a difference in what anyone hears in a dense mix.

Case in point - used my $109 SX "gypsy rose" P/J last weekend:

Family Matters

Sounded pretty darn close to my $2K Sad Metro P/J once the dust settles post-mixdown. Signal path was bass-->cable-->DI.

Mmm... I almost agree :) I purchased a very cool, $19, 18ft cable from a local place, it has lime green tubing and looks great with my Trace Elliot rig. On a club stage, not so noticeable. On the church stage, I could really hear the clarity and output drop off.

Strings. If I didn’t use DR, I’m sure I’d be a D’Addario XL user, mostly because D’Addario sets always seemed to be very consistent from pack to pack. Ahh.. but the tonal difference between a DR Lo-Rider Nickel set and anything else is easy to hear. Besides, when I’m playing other stuff, like 80s Hair Metal stuff, I can slide down to the 18th, 19, 20th fret on my Jazz Bass and bend the E string up to the D string and never worry about it going out of tune.

I’ve also had some less than satisfying DI situations. There are so many more things I can hear using my JH Audio InEars. Stuff that went unnoticed, or things I thought the FOH guys were being extremely picky about. There are some things I love but I no longer use them, because with other high quality gear, you can really hear the lacking qualities of a lesser made item. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not gonna go out and get a huge Avalon and an RMI Basswitch DI thingy, but there is usually a difference between say an MXR or EH pedal vs an Aguilar. TC Electronic has done an outstanding job in making quiet, quality pedals for not a lot of bread.

I was just reading this post...

So our sound guy comes to band practice...

...and thinking about all that I have done to try to perfect my sound. Pedals, strings, different pups, and various basses. Recently, in talking to our FOH guy, I asked if a particular effect sounded OK. He said, honestly, the only time I can tell that you use an effect is when I have you solo'd in the multi track to EQ your tone. Just play Old Blue and you will be fine-- That's a P Bass with Flats. Go figure. I'm thinking about selling everything but it, my tube amp, and a cable.
:D:laugh:;):woot::smug:

I'm always amazed at all the equipment people use for their basses. When I was playing electric I just had a fretless J with flats and an amp. I had total control over my tone. I feel every time you add a piece of equipment you take something away from your sound. What is uniquely you is how your fingers hit the string. Effects just mask that IMHO. I vote P Bass flats and an amp.

I think the push to go ampless (or reduce stage volume) is what causes a lot of worship bass players to reach for effects, mainly just to copy what would be done with an amp in an ideal situation. Overdrive, compression, eq/preamp probably covers 90% of the boards I've seen here, which would be unnecessary if you could use the right amp at the right volume.

My approach has evolved into amp modeling and flat monitoring of my output to try as faithfully as possible to hear/know what’s coming out of the mains.
I like the modeling world for ampless operation and just carried that tech forward into the amp-ok larger stage we are on now by using a flat eq’ed powered speaker.

Or just use an OCSD for your DI. Worked wonders for me in church and out.

I have a couple questions for you OnSong/AirTurn users.
1. I used to be able to Extract Text on the charts that my WL sent to my emails. Since the new update, I can’t get it to work. Anyone having this issue, or know of a fix?
2. I just bought a used (brand new, still in the box) Airturn Quad for $69, but I can not figure out how to get it to work with my iPad. It seems to link with the iPad, but when I assign the pedals, nothing happens! Please help if you can, this would really help in the singing/playing bass at the same time area!
Thanks, and may God bless all your services tomorrow!
Johno!
Oh, and prayers, as I have an audition at a new church tomorrow!

I’m going to add a matching powered sub to my Yamaha DSR112 for the bigger gigs my secular band does.

Couple of thoughts... first, are you sure that you have it set to Mode 3? Then have you gone through the configuration wizard in OnSong? Press the little pedal icon in the black function bar at the top of the screen and then follow the steps...

Oh, and me too. Looks like Extract Text is broken on this update. I can’t get it working either.

Yep, I did that. I’ll try resetting to make sure it’s in the right mode. I tried doing that, but not sure I’m doing it right.

That’s a bummer. I wonder if there is a work around? Not sure I’ll keep using it if I can’t pull them from email and then edit in the app.

Playing as a guest bassist at another church tomorrow, don't know anybody there, just received the order of service and the pdfs of the music...
opening music is Herbie Hancock's Cantaloupe Island!
Should be fun...

Church currently has an art exhibition going on too...

Blessed Sunday tomorrow folks!

Cheers,
SoundSupport
My Funk band plays Cantaloupe Island!

I think you missed “two” things...
The second being the type of sound person that is not an educated or trained sound person, rather, one that has no clue on how to use the equipment at their disposal.

^^^^^^ THIS.. times a lot!
This is the issue I'm constantly dealing with my preacher about... before he came, I ran sound.. I was limited when I started, but I researched.. TONS.. to learn to do the best job with what we have... I recieved many compliments.. not putting myself on a pedestal here... about how good the sound always was...

Now, there's issue after issue with him at the healm... his thought is ALL faders and Master at unity...

In his mind, this is correct... regardless my , numerous attempts to explain why it isn't... I finally gave up and haven't played anymore
