The Praise and Worship Band Bassists Club

^^^^^^ THIS.. times a lot!
This is the issue I'm constantly dealing with my preacher about... before he came, I ran sound.. I was limited when I started, but I researched.. TONS.. to learn to do the best job with what we have... I recieved many compliments.. not putting myself on a pedestal here... about how good the sound always was...

Now, there's issue after issue with him at the healm... his thought is ALL faders and Master at unity...

In his mind, this is correct... regardless my , numerous attempts to explain why it isn't... I finally gave up and haven't played anymore

That is abjectly frustrating. But, rather than pull your hair out, it’s better that you stepped away.

Our Soundboy (at 15, he’s too young to be considered a “Soundman”) is similarity uneducated and also lacks the desire to study Sound Reinforcement. 6 mos ago I had to switch over to keys when we lost our kb Player. This past Sunday, I began the kb intro to “Because He Lives” (our sole Traditional song for the day), and I heard nothing (as in: “not-a-thing) coming out the FOH, 5’ to my left. Just my amp, on stage.

(*sigh*) :eyebrow:

I think the push to go ampless (or reduce stage volume) is what causes a lot of worship bass players to reach for effects, mainly just to copy what would be done with an amp in an ideal situation. Overdrive, compression, eq/preamp probably covers 90% of the boards I've seen here, which would be unnecessary if you could use the right amp at the right volume.

Ok, I don't have any experience with ampless setups. However, I never used compression or overdrive with my amp. I did use the EQ a little. I just had a little cube amp that had an XLR out to the PA. I never played the CCM style, so I could see where you might be trying to match sounds on records.

This us the current state of the pedalboard. So far it has worked very well for me. My tendency is to go large, then sell off, go basic and slowly bulid back up to fit the one more pedal that I ‘need’. This is a decent compromise for me now. Yeah, I miss all the pedal options I had on my big board, but at this time, this works... Really well. Noble, OmniCabSim Deluxe and microThumpinator (HPF) in their well earned locations. FEA-Labs DB-CL in trial, and performing very well. dsm DriveMaker has only been used in the secular band. Anadime Bass Chorus... the.best.

Yep, I did that. I’ll try resetting to make sure it’s in the right mode. I tried doing that, but not sure I’m doing it right.

That’s a bummer. I wonder if there is a work around? Not sure I’ll keep using it if I can’t pull them from email and then edit in the app.
It is a pain. Good ideas for users to be shooting them emails to fix in the next update...

As a workaround, sometimes I find it as easy or easier to edit manually in an email or text doc and cut n paste into a blank doc. In fact sometimes I find it quicker than doing it in OnSong!

PS Have you signed up to WorshipTogether.com? It’s free and they do free to download ChordPro charts for lots of the popular worship tunes. I use it a lot for sourcing stuff for OnSong... plus lots of other functionality for Planning Centre etc

So guest spot this morning went really well...
Cantaloupe Island worked really nicely in rehearsal, then the pianist pointed out that we didn't have a postludium (exit song)....
...."How about 'Mercy Mercy Mercy'?":cool:

Come the end of the service, cue congregation clicking their fingers along to it. And then applause.:thumbsup:

Twas good fun. Just a pianist and a bassist who had never played together in their lives, but it worked.

Leads to a question, though - if the preludium and postludium are instrumental, do you feel it has to be a Christian piece of music? What's the vote?

Peace,
Soundsupport

I vote that it is a local community standards issue. What is okay in one house is not in another. While some jazz may have been picked up by a greater percentage of the general population will it be seen as a papa of modern pop music or an America and modern version of Bach?

I remember a video of Gospel Jazz with Debra Killings on bass where the leader makes his case for Gospel Jazz when they go into Herbie Hancock's Chameleon. On the other hand I read of a bass player on learngospelmusic.com who found a line but it turned out to be Rcik James' Super Freak. I had my own experience with that when playing Martha Munizzi's Say The Name and when I took it home to transcribe what I did for later use it was very close to Sly Stone's If You Want Me To Stay bass line.

There is a song currently in rotation on the Sunday Gospel radio show with a mass choir and when we get to the bridge it is unmistakably Weather Report's Birdland

Good morning everyone! I'm using my other God-given talent today for work, but I hope you all have a great Sunday of worship. Our church just hit their 50th Anniversary and I'm extremely sad that I could not make it to their one, gigantic celebration service today. I couldn't get out of this work commitment since it had been on the calendar for a year with a contract in place.

Good morning everyone. Wanted to give an update and a question. I took the advice here and decided to purchase a OCSD and used it today for the first time. I really like the way my bass sounds through the OCSD at home and church but did encounter some issues today. Mainly noise, with the pedal on there was prevalent hiss in my in ears. So hence the question. I didn’t not hear this at home and I know there were some crazy gain structure going on in the pa. When I first tried the pedal I started by running it into the 1/4 of the tech 21 bass driver (switched off)Di to protect against any phantom power. Well the bass was overpowering my in ears and the mix way too much gain. So I turned took out the tech 21 and went straight to the board from the OCSD. Still sounded like too much gain so u turned the level down on the OCSD and the sound guy told me he turned the gain down at the board. But when I switched the OCSD off my bass alone was overdriving my in ears , but without the hiss. So the question is how do you set the gain structure for these pedals? Our worship set sounded great even with the hiss but I know with that the other worship leader will have an issue with the hiss. For today it was my lakland 55-01-tuner-OCSD- board then I don’t know. That said I thought today was the best sound our little group ever had. Attached is a photo of the OCSD settings

You may want to post this in the OCSD thread where the builder hangs out: NPD DSM Noisemaker OmniCabSim

What is your monitor setup?

I have my IEMs plugged into the OCSD headphone jack (which has a volume control) and I run my Aviom headphone jack into the Aux in of the OCSD. I had a hiss issue, but I adjusted the Aviom and the hiss went away.

Prayers for all who are affected by Hurricane Florence! We had a great service today! Songs were :

Our God- we used to have a stylized arrangement we did, but we have new choir members, and band members, so we reverted back to the Chris Tomlin version.

You Deserve it

And a new (for us) song "My Worship" by Phil Thompson!

Went great!

On an unrelated note, I wore the tie I got for my birthday for the first time, and here's a fun picture from High School!

Doesn’t look like you’ve got a huge gain on the OCSD, it’s not like you’re pumping out +12db! On that basis, the problem wouldn’t be with you, it would be with the gain structures in the desk.

Personally, I always start by setting any gain based pedals to effectively unity gain - that is, the effect output is (pretty much) at the same perceived level as the non-effected signal. On my board there are 3 pedals with gain/level controls. Eden CaliforniWah, EHX Bass Soul Food (and so did the Morley Dual Bass Wah it replaced) and Tech 21 Sansamp VT Bass DI.

So the Bass Soul Food is set for a very mild O/D and only the tiniest level of level boost when turned on. Genuinely, just a smidge. The CaliforniWah is set so that the effect volume is the same as when it’s switchd off. The Sansamp is set to a clean tone with the character between a B-15 and SVT and the level set the same with and without the pedal engaged. I’ll only increase the level control if the sound guy specifically asks me for level.

So if you’re sending that sort of signal level and your sound is still stupidly loud and distorted then, in my opinion, the problem is pretty much the sound guy’s not yours.

Exceptionally well said, as usual!
