The proofreading thread

Hey guys,

For a few years I've been transcribing fairly complicated songs which I include in the comments of my Youtube covers and sometimes post here.

I have often wished someone with fresh ears would proofread my transcriptions before I post them. I got pretty good at this but sometimes noticed a few days after the fact that - ouch - something was embarassingly off due to ear fatigue or something. Or had trouble figuring out that one last fill.

Since someone's gotta start, here's Opeth's newest song "Sorceress" which was released yesterday. I got the whacky parts down but couldn't quite make out the verse and chorus (are there low Bb's or is it all A's?)

I hear that.... ear fatigue and not wanting to post. I've come back to some of my stuff and said "what?!"

Does your transcribing software have a playback function? Finale does and its a great way to quickly find your mistakes, at least the blatant ones. However, even for more subtle stuff like "are those A's ir B's" you can switch back and forth and compare. That helps.

You can also write your caveats in your postings of transcriptions and let the user decide. Lord knows that almost every transcrition book has a flaw or 2. Most people will appreciate your effort of the whole, let alone a note saying "watch out for x." Good luck.

I'm new to using transcribing software, but I completely sympathize. I use Sibelius 7 First. I'm surprised that there aren't more replies with suggested edits. My guess is that anyone who posts a transcription welcomes editing. Doing the original transcription is much more fun than editing it. The playback feature certainly helps.
