Without anyone (except Norway) even really trying hydropower accounts for over 20% of the world's electricity generation... Why are renewables not taken more seriously and utilized more? Regardless of your feelings on environmentalism, it's simply more sustainable (fossil fuels will run out) and cheaper (doesn't take long to start paying for itself in energy production for build cost).
I'm giving a presentation on the big 3 RES* next week and while I knew that renewable resources had more than enough potential to power all of civilization (the amount of energy in various forms in the environment is staggering actually) I had my mind repeatedly blown by the numbers on cost effectiveness, efficiency, and especially their usefulness in addressing far more societal issues than just global warming and pollution.
Solar, wind, and hydroelectric. Plus biomass which is technically renewable, but still relatively polluting. It's complex. It pollutes when you burn it, but then arguably goes back to net zero because regrowing the fuel crop takes back in much of what is released when it burns.

What's the point of veal? It's like turkey. The best turkey isn't as good as okay chicken and the best veal isn't as good as okay beef. Let the baby cows grow so I can eat them later.
