The recent CD purchase thread...

Jonas Hellborg/Shawn Lane/Apt Q-258-Time is the enemy
Jonas Hellborg/Shawn Lane/Apt Q-258-Zenhouse

Both of these have really blown me away. Both very different (one is an album of electric fusion, the other an album of acoustic improvisation) and both containing some very honest and true improvisation. Space Time Continuum from TITE just has some of the most astoudingly moving guitar work from Shawn, it is sublime!

I also picked up Animal Logic. I love it. Stanley Clarke and Stewart Copeland are just a fantastic duo, and Deborah Holland has a brilliant voice, I've really been digging this one!

I plan to pick up another Level 42 double album sometime soon too!

Primus: Frizzle Fry, Miscellaneous Debris, Sailing the Seas of Cheese. These are updating from cassette to CD, so they might not really count.

Silversun Pickups, Carnavas
Cursive, Happy Hollow
Small Sins, Small Sins
Damien Rice, 9 Sins
20th Century Masters, The Best of the Who
The Decemberists, Crane Wife
Franz Ferdinand, You Could Have it so Much Better

Today's purchases:

Sonic Youth - Rather Ripped

I didn't know they still had it in them to make albums this good. As close as they'll ever get to a pop album, yet still definitely Sonic Youth. Maybe my favorite album of theirs since Goo.

Lyrics Born - Overnite Encore: Lyrics Born Live

Lyrics Born puts on my favorite live hip-hop show this side of the Roots. I saw him last year in Sacramento, and this album does a decent job capturing the energy and rawness of his stage performance. Good stuff.

Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane at Carnegie Hall [Live]

Neither is at their best here, but on I'll take either one on their worst day over the best day of most performers. Some moments do work really well, and the power of these two is undeniable.

The Beatles - Love

A gift for my stepfather, something he asked for. I haven't heard this album though (is this right?) I understand it was made as the soundtrack for a Cirque de Soleil show. I'm hoping the remixes aren't over the top.

I was just listening to Aphex Twin right now (Selected Ambient Works).

The Richard D James album is probably my favourite Aphex album, "4" and "Fingerbib" are probably the best tracks off it, but "To cure a weakling child" is ace (as is the "Countour Regard" remix of that track).

Just bought:

*Jonas Hellborg-Bass
*John Mclaughlin, Jaco Pastorius and Tony Williams-The Trio of Doom
*Stanley Clarke-I wanna play for you
*Jeff Berlin/Vox Humana-Champion
*John Mclaughlin and Carlos Santana-Love, Devotion, Surrender
