I've got TI flats on my Mercalli. It's a different beast with flats on.

the 8's were the stock pups. I bought several sets when they blew them out. The now reside in both my P basses and I think there might still be a set floating around.

I love 'em!!

Back in. Scored my old White Rumblefish JJ back from Bart. Sold it to Shamrock in San Diego. Shamrock sold it to someone in Florida. Bart bought it a few years back so it came back to the Northwest. I called dibs at a GTG and Bart, gentleman that he is, remembered!

Here it stays!

Now I need to score the original gold PG that was changed out along the way somewhere. Gold on white is not for everyone I know but for us old timers it is a class reference to old Fender P Basses so on 'fish, it kinda makes sense to me in a heritage of kinda way.

Aw, well, another TB'er was kind enough to offer me the pickguard when I was looking for one, so...circle of life, hakuna matata, etc. ;)

Anyway, it also gave me an excuse to (finally!) install my new mint green pickguard from Dazbootman:

I still don't know whether or not I prefer it over the original silvery-blue PG, but I do think it looks pretty cool!

The other thing I'd like to try one of these days is white pearl, like this one on RevFan's site:

Not a fan of the mint.

Except in this case. Looks killer! I don't know how well it would work on other basses without that cool Reverend aesthetic. I'd also love to see before and after.

Thanks for the compliments. Believe it or not, the PG is actually even mintier in person!

I hear ya, though. I normally don't like mint guards when they're use to simulate aged white nitrate pieces on Strats and the like. However, the color seemed like it just might work with the `Fish's quirky Jet Age design.

Unfortunately, it also reminds me of Andes chocolate mints:

Getting back to bass playing after many years performing on guitar in an acoustic duo. I the proud owner of a Mercalli 5-FM (# please). A few weeks ago I picked up a tc electronics bg250 AMP. Sounds good but the strings are round wound from the previous owner. The bass is a tad twangy for me which is interesting because I always use round wounds in the past on a MM sting5 and a carvin 5 fretless. I find myself muting the strings a bit with the palm of my hand to control the twang which is silly. Any suggestions regarding strings, flats or 1/2 rounds that will work if I want to occasionally do some slap bass too?

If the strings are new, they'll mellow some with use.
You can use the passive tone on your bass to tame some of this in the mean time.
You could also dial the "tweeter tone" back on your amp a bit.

I have a set of Circle K balanced .136 strings on one of my Mercallis (the other has flats). They are a hybrid nickel string. The pickups on my Mercalli seem to be really hot, and these strings seem to give a nice kind of drive and punch with the tone wide open. In addition to the tone knob, you can use the blend pot to add or take away from that. The first time I took it to rehearsal, I got lots of head-turns and compliments from the band. We do blues/rock. Unfortunately I can't speak from experience on slap as it's just not something I do at all.

But if you can compromise on the slap sound, flats are always magic to me. Tonight I have my first outing with the Mercalli w/GHS Precision flats and will report back. I have not yet played the GHS flats, but I have Chromes (which seem to be the brightest) on some of my 2 pickup basses and LaBella Deep Talkin Flats on my P bass and those are both great.

I'm assuming you've checked your amp and made sure that no toneprints are eq'ing it in a funky way?

Thanks for the ideas. I'm not using any tone prints. The amp sounds fine without them. Please LMK how it went tonight with the flats. They maybe the ticket for me. I'm also curious about your bass settings too!
