The Rickenbacker Club Part Twelve

Got to jam with my mom and stepdad a few days ago. Took the Ric. Had to rent a combo amp. Dang... it sounds good. I'm wondering what flats would sound like. I'd rather buy another Ric for flats. Haha.
Hoping the honeymoon doesn't end.

That darker fireglo is sexy.

I love flats on mine but I also have one with round wounds. Sounds like you know what to do.

If you can - do that!

I slapped flats on mine about six months ago and love it - but every now and then I miss having rounds on it. For the band I am in now - flats are more appropriate and generally speaking they are more my thing, which is why I have kept them on. It's really only at home when I want to do some different things with it that I really miss the rounds.

It was watching this whole ACL show that had me make the move to flats. Jack Lawrence w/ The Racontuers. Sweet tone!!

I have Roto flats on my 4004. It changes the tone up pretty dramatically. I 2nd the idea of having a 2nd Ric for flats. :) You could also try a middle of the road approach. I put Labella White Tapes on my 4001SFL, and they're a really nice slot right in the middle between the brightness of normal rounds and the tone of flats. I love them.

There is no such thing as an "indestructible" case. Flying with an instrument is ALWAYS a risk of damage or theft! I've seen it all in 20 years of international music travel. Every style case can fail & all are subject to airline personnel working at minimum wage.

The SKB i-series are really great, but i have seen them break & leak afterwards.
Anvil style cases are wonderful, too, but so heavy (can you say oversize & overweight fees?) and also are prone to damage. I've seen a forklift go right through one!

It comes down to what your acceptable risk to cost ratio is. A private insured courier being the safest and most expensive option (Rockit Cargo, for instance) down to wishing the best with a flimsy gig bag. Oddly enough, the gig bag will make it safely 9 times out of 10 (but who wants to be the 1 out of 10?).

I've traveled extensively across the globe for 2 decades: everywhere from Turkey to Argentina to Scotland to north NORTH Canada. I have had very few instruments damaged. Only twice that I recall.

I have had good experience with the SKB Bass Safe boot & their standard plastic hard shells. Reasonable protection, mimimal (if any) oversize fees and what has been an admirable track record in my experience.

That said, I do not fly with my '75 Ric. It's just too precious to me (the tone is exceptional for some reason ?) & not worth the risk. With any case or carrier.

There was some promising talk earlier in the thread about a potential custom run of SKB cases designed to fit Rick 4000 series bases without the structural flaws of the standard model available from the RIC boutique and other locations...

I know I know. I spoke to Chris of PotR a few weeks back about the SKB "flight case" and he tells me SKB is being a douche now. I still hope he is able to pull something off. if he does, I'm down for 2 of them. Initially SKB said he'd have to buy 10. He ran the idea past me since he knew I recently purchased a calzone case for my 4002. I told him at the price he quoted, he'd sell 10 easy. Now SKB is back peddling faster than Lance Armstrong!! Those bastard!!

It's all good, Sepp, just some friendly ribbing.

I actually broke down and ebay'd myself a genuine article 70's vintage case. Form fitted inside without the stupid hole puncher feet and there's more than little girl's school uniform ribbon holding it open.

I'd probably still buy a flight case though.

I do like those 70's Rickenbacker form fitted tolex cases. I own 4 or 5, I think. They are quite nice to keep your Rickenbacker cushioned. However, it's not a flight case. When shipping my basses via Fed ex. I use the modern RIC SKB case in a heavy duty box with lots of padding. I then worry the whole time it's in transit.

I wish SKB would honor the promise to make them for the Rickenbacker. Will they, I now tend to doubt it.
