Got the TNG full series thanks to a friend mid-last year - finally finished watching it the other day. Series was way better than I even remember (hadn't seen most eps in 10+ years). But then I started watching TOS Season 3 which I picked up recently to finish off the series - shock! Shatner was WAAAAAAYYYYY overacting in the first couple eps I watched. Has anyone else experienced similar?

Of course I'll still keep it...Star Trek was one of the few things my (deceased) mother and I could agree on in life. I still enjoy TOS overall.

Deep Space Nine - should I give it a second chance? I remember thinking "meh" when I saw the first season as a kid. Haven't watched any of it since...

DS9 ? Yes! It really picks up from season 2. Especially after Siskin shaves his head

I'm a straight up OG Start Trek guy (I refuse to call it TOS, the same way I refuse to call Star Wars, "A New Hope"). Star Trek for me is all about Sunday afternoon crap TV between football seasons. Then, I started watching them again on BBC and Netflix, and was absolutely shocked at how much they cut out of the original run time to add commercials. Sometimes like even ten minutes.

Anywho, when you get down to it, there were only, like, six episodes of Star Trek that they just kept recycling:

1) Omnipotent Super Space Being. Sometimes they want to judge humanity, most times they just want to understand it. Either way, the crew gets caught in compromising situations, often derived from their own psyches.

2) Planet that resembles Earth from some time period in the past, maybe there's a distinct change. It might even be Earth in the past. Like when Kirk wanted to bang Joan Collins, but Spock pushed her in front of a turnup truck so's not to break the future.

3) Human Adversary. Kahn, Harry Mudd, Gary Mitchel.

4) Alien Adversary. Romulan, Klingon, Gorn, Tribble.

5) Human-like alien race that has one major distinction that is the antithesis of our own understanding. Like the right half of the Riddler's face is black, but on the other guy it's the left half.

6) Fight to the Death. Doesn't matter how you get there -- be it an omnipotent super space being, a human adversary, an alien adversary, or you're just on a deathmatch Earth run by beings that for the most part resemble humans -- if there's a fight to death, it's part of this category.

That's pretty much OG Star Trek. If I missed one, I'm sorry, go ahead and amend the list.

Well Spock actually didn't push anybody in front of a truck
Kirk held McCoy back from saving Edith Keelr--but the category still stands in your list.

I realize what the truth was: It's just funnier when Spock pushes her in front of a turnup truck.

Harlen Ellison and "City on the Edge of Whatever"... It's the greatest Science Fiction story ever told! Kirk wants to bang a hot chick, and Spock is opposed because of logic. No one else could have ever thought of anything like that, ever.

Best. Episode. Ever.

It is certainly in my top 5 for all episodes of anything branded Star Trek
