The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

Just got one.

FYI tried to reset my password, the password reset email was just html code, clicked on a link there and it sent me to the page to reset my password again. No biggie, still got my single slice on the way!
There seems to be something going on with password resets on the website, I'm looking into it. If I can't figure it out I'll have to ask @Pedalnetics for help (when he has time, obviously holiday/family take priority).

Tried to order a single slice but ran into some web site issues for which a pm has been sent. On a related note, perhaps the description on the site would benefit from a few specific deets:

-is attack time shortest fully c-clockwise?
-is blend 100% affected fully clockwise?
-is "comp" a ratio control? If not then what?
-does sens = threshold?

It seems that the instructions for a pedal would be more useful if posted in a logical, easy to find place rather than randomly scattered in this thread ;)

Thanks
Yup, I'm still working on a manual for it, I'll get it all posted on the site when I have it (hopefully today or tomorrow). But short answer, all your assumptions there are correct.
  • Shortest attack is full counterclockwise
  • blend is 100% affected fully clockwise, 100% unaffected fully counterclockwise
  • Comp is a ratio control
  • Sens = Sensitivity = Threshold

A nice Single Slice is on its way to Under Downunder, I wonder if I am the most southern order of a Slice since I am just below -43* south.
I hate the time difference between me and the US, there were only 3 Slices left when I logged on the computer tonight.

Now I just need a Wrecking Ball PCB to join my other 25 items in the C2CE shopping cart and I will be done for the year.
Have a good one you all
Michael

Range on the Comp/Ratio control? 1:1 - 1:20 or something?

+1 on this. The lack of technical info/detail has definitely kept me from being an initial/early adopter on this one as normally something like a new tube compressor from a brand I use and trust would be irresistible to me. I’m also a bit curious about the changes made between mk ii and mk iv that were referenced and how those changes will be received.

Full clockwise is 1:1, the datasheet for the VCA I'm using doesn't have the numbers I need. But I do have the equipment to measure it, I'll get it set up tonight and get numbers posted both here and on the product page of the site.

Duly noted, that's understandable. I'll prioritize getting more technical info put together for it, I should be able to get most (if not all) of what I need tonight.

The mk numbers were for internal development use, nothing prior to mk iv was ever released. Mk i and mk ii were mostly the same design with a few tweaks in between. It was an optical compressor design with two tubes and not a lot of control over the sound. When I received mostly negative feedback on mk ii I completely scrapped the design and started over, because it seemed like I was going in the wrong direction. Mk iii was the first VCA design I played with, and it was very simple, just a compression/peak reduction/ratio (whatever you want to call it) control and volume. Mk iv added the attack and sensitivity controls. Revision A to the mk iv design added the clean blend but didn't change anything else, so I kept the same mk number and changed the revision.

Short answer: mk ii and mk iv are completely different circuits.

Curious to know if anyone runs a Slampegg pre into a neptunium? Looking for a *little* added grit to add to my neptunium! Tried to use a More to add some depth but it wasn’t quite the effect I was looking for
Close; I have a Nobelium (Sushibox build) at the end of my chain. I prefer clean tones, but I did a little experiment and tried to dirty up my sound. Turns out, I actually like running the gain on the Slampegg a little hotter than I thought. Everything was fed through the 1/4 inch output to an Ampeg V4-B reissue running clean into 2 15 inch cabs. It got pretty gritty at full gain on the Slampegg, but just shy of a full on od sound. For reference, it is dirtier than my PF-20t at full gain. The Nobellium and Slampegg play well together.
Hope this helps; please note that this is the 12AX7 Slampegg, not the new Grand Slampegg.

Well I have Single Slice on the bench for some measurements, and it looks like I was wrong, it's not really accurate to describe the Compression control as ratio, it acts more like a sustain control and does not change the gain reduction ratio.

I apologize for misspeaking before, I haven't historically been a big compressor user so I've been trying to translate "this sounds good and works well" into words that actually mean things and it hasn't been going well. I'm still working on how to write everything out in a way that makes sense, but I hope to have something this evening.

Me! I did this for the first time Sunday on a gig, the Slampegg certainly adds the grit the Neptunium is lacking. Cool to have a clean and dirty sound to play with

Can you share what function the tubes in the Single Slice circuit serve?

If " comp" is not ratio and more of a sustain control, based on my experience with other comps, it may actually regulate the input gain? That's what "sustain" does on my Warden clone. Does that mean ratio is fixed??

It's just the input and output stage, the tube isn't doing any compression.

The ratio should theoretically be fixed, but I'm having trouble finding information on what it is. I'm seeing information in some places indicating it is around 1:4, but I can't find anything in the datasheet that backs that up.

The function of the Comp control is to adjust the bias of the device that's doing the compression (OTA op-amp), so it's controlling how much that stage is amplifying the signal, which I think most accurately matches the sustain control of things like the Dynacomp.

Here's a quick rundown of the controls for the pedal, which I have added to the product page on the site:

Comp - compression; effectively controls the sustain or release time of the signal. Counterclockwise will be shorter sustain, clockwise will be longer.

Output - master volume; behaves differently from an input volume control as it does not affect the operation of the compression itself, just how loud it is coming out the end.

Sens - sensitivity; sets the sensitivity threshold level for the compression.

Attack - sets the attack time of the compression. Counterclockwise is faster, clockwise is slower.

Blend - blends the dry/unaffected signal with the compressed/affected signal. Full counterclockwise is 100% unaffected, full clockwise is 100% affected.

Sure do! However, I use the Slampegg as more of a drive pedal in that setup, so it is not always on.

I’ve also been using my minitube London Underground into my Venus Z for the same purpose, though the London Underground is on full time in that particular setup.
