The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

Solid-state UA boards arrived in Illinois this morning, they'll probably show up in the next day or two. The tweed preamp is somewhere in the mess of my workbench.
Are you using a JFET or something else to replace the tube in the SSUA?

SSUA (working title: Silicon Accelerator) uses op-amps. I just got notification from DHL that the boards were actually delivered today, so we'll see if I can find time tonight to try it out.

Bassman Pre is also somewhere among the mess of my workbench, probably right next to the Tweed. It's in there.

I hope nobody minds, I'm taking a personal day this evening. My daughter got this electric scooter in the fall and she loves the look and the feel of it, but she complained that it was too slow. So now that the weather is warming up it seemed like a good time to hot rod it. I'm not much of a mechanic, but if it's electric then I can generally figure it out.

Also as you can see, my workbench is in a constant state of "I'll clean up after I finish this project."

So in all honesty, Silicon Accelerator sounds pretty freaking good. It stays pretty well clean and doesn't get the nice grit like UA does, but it actually replicates the clean tone reasonably well. And with the tonestack switched off it does a passable Space Heater impression as well. The power amp emulation is also passable, I'll play with that some more too. I don't anticipate switching my whole lineup over to solid-state, but this thing may make its way out into the world.

Pics and clips to come later tonight.

Cool. That sounds like it might be fun to play with.
But more importantly how is the scooter performing?
It's been raining and cold all day, haven't had a chance to play yet. Weekend weather is supposed to be miserable, but hopefully next week will start to warm up.

Tried the Westinghouse running into Helix Native and the results are pretty nice. It’s more of a feel change than a huge tone change. The tube adds a nice compression that feels good but isn’t crazy. It makes the bass “smaller” sounding for lack of a better phrase but in a pleasant where it feels more controlled. The volts control seems to let more or less highs through but again nothing drastic. It’s one of those things that you don’t notice too much until you turn it off. It’s especially cool on the bright dirty tones I tend to like. It smooths the edges without needing to add a ton of extra EQ.

I recently got a Particle Accelerator. I want a cleaner tone without the breakup of the 12ax7, so I thought about putting a 12au7 in. Any recommendations on a specific 12au7 to use?
Hard to go wrong really. I use JJ/Tesla in my builds for customers because they're reliable, easy to find, and affordable. For my personal stuff I use mostly NOS tubes, my favorites are Mullard, Amperex, RCA, GE, and Raytheon. Plenty of good ones out there.

Since this is already a lazy build with no tubes I decided to go extra lazy and use a faceplate instead of UV printing and powdercoating. I think it turned out pretty sharp. I'll see if I can get some quick recordings tonight, otherwise may wait for the weekend.

That looks pretty cool! I'd be curious to test it against my Particle Accelerator, London Underground, and Underground Accelerator! Yes I use all three, I have three boards :)

Sharp indeed! Now I'm curious about the interactivity of the Volume and Master knobs... and how the latter is tied to the power amp emulation toggle switch, if I'm not overinterpreting the labelling.

Nope, you're spot on. So the power amp emulation comes after the volume control, but the Master control comes after the power amp emulation. So if power amp is off, then master does nothing. If power amp is on then the Volume becomes like a secondary gain control. I'm considering losing the Master control and just having a fixed level for the power emulation, so the Volume will be volume, period.

I bought a JJ 12AT7 for my Particle Accelerator and I'm really happy with it. I think it provides the right amount of gain for what I'm looking for.

Thanks for your reply. I thought about an 12AT7, but I'm really looking for no breakup really. It might work even with a little hair, don't know. Might try both.
