The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

I recently picked up a used Space Heater and a Finally... do I qualify for the Secret Society now? I ran out of power cables (poor pedalboard planning, LOL) so I haven't used them together yet, but one at a time, at low gain, they're giving me exactly the warm, full tone I've been seeking for a long time. Big fan, total convert.

But... I'm having an issue with the Space Heater that makes it unusable, and I'm looking for advice on what to troubleshoot. It keeps "cutting out", not completely, but like with an ~80% reduction in volume. This happens for maybe 5-10 seconds at a time, then it'll be good for another minute or two, then another few seconds out. It happens long after any warmup period. Where do I look for causes? Am I underpowering it? It's in a 200 mA @ 9V plug in a OneSpot power supply, so it "should" be able to get the recommended 250 mA. Do I need "the fix" for polarity or something? Could the tube itself be going bad? It is not that old (August 2022), the previous owner seems very trustworthy and says they did not have a problem with it. When I use the Finally in the same position, just as a gain and ignoring the DI, it works great. Any troubleshooting advice appreciated.
I'm assuming this is a OneSpot Pro CS series supply? If that's the case then it should be fine as the labels on the outputs don't actually correspond to the maximum output available.

That does sound like a common symptom of a tube on its way out though, do you have another tube you could try swapping it with? That would be the first thing I would take a look at. If you've tried another tube and that doesn't fix it shoot me a PM or email and we'll get it figured out.

Correcto! That flexibility is why I like them. I've actually tried it on both a CS6 and CS7.

Many thanks, master sushi chef! I don't have any other tubes (er... except the one in the Finally?) but very willing to purchase another tube and try it out. Consider it done, I'll update later!

Why not swap the tubes between the two and see if the problem either persists with the Space Heater or follows the tube to the Finally. Just make sure they are unplugged when doing so. You'll get your answer much sooner.

I support this. If you don't already have tubes laying around you could certainly swap the tube from the Finally into the Space Heater for testing. If it fixes the problem then you know the tube was the problem and you know you'll need a new one. If not, then the tube may be fine and there may be something else up that I need to look at.

I'm curious why you run the Finally at the beginning. If you use the XLR, none of your effects will be in the signal. Do you run two lines, clean and affected?

That's correct. I'm running the Finally up front as a clean DI and to give the rest of the signal chain a bit of tube colour. I'm then using a Darkglass Element at the end of the chain for my affected line DI, cab sim, and headphone amp when required.

I typically run the Octaver as early in the chain as possible so that no noise or artifacts trip its ability to track. Compression is about the only thing I put before it and I find that it helps the tracking as the signal I'm sending is well.. compressed. SO I'm sure you're going to get the question of, how are you powering everything, are you using a bass with single coils or one that has an inherit noise, how driven are you running the finally and how loud? I recently picked up a Finally and it's practically silent in all applications, but I'm usually using pickups that are in a humbucking configuration or using split coils

I'm powering everything with a OneSpot Pro CS12, but running the Finally by itself from a standard OneSpot wall wart. I'm running Dingwall NG3s, active preamp with humbucking pickups. Using low gain on the Finally, about 10:00 just to get some tube colour, and setting the volume for unity gain with the dry signal. No issue with the Finally bypassed, engaging the Finally immediately makes the octaver produce glitchy bursts of tracking. Like blips.

I know we keep it classy around here, but I am here to talk about the girth. Oh the girth! Tone just thicc now. Dreamcatcher, blue channel stock tube swapped out for a 12AU7 (JJ ECC802S). Hit so hard. And then I clicked on my EQ pedal that's set up as a bass boost after the Sushi and I felt like "that Vince McMahon meme." Unbelievable tone girth. Only drawback is now I'm not sure if I should buy another EQ/boost pedal so I can leave one always on after the Dreamcatcher, or if I should just get a dedicated buffer to help out the almost four feet of pedalboard that happens before the Sushi. Hopefully the answer is buying a More (or just more Sushi).

Replace your tuner with a Petersen strobo stomp hd it has a good buffer built in

It's the Boss Bass EQ. Just a lil bump in the lows and then a tiny volume cut to get it sounding closer to unity volume but fatter. Entire board minus that and the two delays runs into the Dreamcatcher. Blue channel EQ all nearly dimed, volume close to dimed, gain as much clean as I can get before breakup.

The Grand Slampegg that was teased on Instagram made me salivate a bit.
It did come out rather tasty. I never planned to do lasered wood faceplates again, but I wanted to take one of these to NAMM and my UV printer is currently waiting on parts for repair, so my artwork options were limited.

I would thinking adding Grand in front would denote more things being on it. Or is the pedal as a whole been refined and improved?

It has a different tube and the Chef has dropped the ultra Hi as wasn't really bringing anything to the party, there maybe other changes too.

Sorry for all the questions this morning, but for anyone, if you didn’t use the Finally as your DI, would it just act like a Space Heater?

Yes, exactly that. Which is why the SH has since been discontinued. I have an SH from the last batch and it's great at either adding a little warmth or for drive other pedals/amp a little more or just going a bit bonkers with!

I'm missing all my sushi boxes atm as they are in storage but I'll be getting a few at the weekend!

Pretty sure i'm going to have to do the polarity mod on my SBVT to get it to play nicely with the SH.

Say the word, name your price. When your done with that proto... :)

Have a great NAMM btw

Thanks for the responses. Here’s what I’m thinking. I use the UA now as always on, but don’t tweak the EQ a lot. And have Finally as my DI. I also have a clean boost I can hit the UA with. If I got a new preamp DI and used it to FOH and kept my UA (not a newer one with EQ switch) flat and had ability to boost it, would my Finally then be redundant? Would there be any reason to keep that as my DI to FOH? Advantages and disadvantages?
