Early 80’s before I had a five string.
I programmed this...

And it can do so much more! I've never felt the need to get a dedicated bass monosynth.

Did a DEVO tribute show a couple of months ago and ended up playing two of the three songs using synth. I used Magellan software on an iPad with my midi controller. My original intention was to learn them on my bass guitar but I quickly realized that the keyboard parts weren't going to be easy to translate to fretboard. It went well but I won't be dragging that extra gear around to our regular shows just to play those two songs.
Hey yall, I'm looking to buy my first synth for the purpose of playing key bass and I wanted to know
what y'all thought about between these three options:
1. Roland GAIA SH-01
2. Moog Minitaur (I have an an AKAI MPK mini for control)
3. Novation Bass Station II

I'm not an expert, but I'm assuming you're planning to connect from AKAI MPK mini to Minitaur using USB type B to type B cable and that will not work. I don't think you can just connect AKAI MPK mini to minitaur via usb, you will need a computer for that, or connect via midi to a keyboard
I bought an Oberheim Matrix 1000 back in 1990, and still have it. That thing has bass that will shake a building if mated with a great amp and speakers (+ sub-woofers).

When a friend asked me to start a band with him in the early eighties, I felt my best bet was to get a synthesizer.
A flatmate that owned a MiniKorg-700 and a Wurlitzer, gave me some advice, that's how I got a secondhand Korg MS20. I bought that, after checking out a dozen other options, because I liked the roughness and depth of the basstones it could produce. I didn't take long before I switched to bass guitar, but I've always played and fiddled with the MS20 through the years. I've had many good offers to sell the Korg, but never did.
A friend gave me a Yamaha MU5 tone generator, it's handy to use with the Roland PC-200 keyboard controller I got for it. I also bought a Yamaha QY70 sequencer to check out with it. And a KORG Volca Bass because the filter is similar to the MiniKorg-700, and it has 3 VCO's. It's easier to carry around in your bass bag too.
I'm considering a SQ-1 step sequencer, but don't do a lot of synthesizer lately, so it's not in a hurry.

I also bought an Arturia Mini-Brute shortly after they came out. There really is nothing like analog if you want to drive the bass. 
Korg has an awesome MS20 iPad app complete with sequencer. Anyone interested should check it out.
In the meantime, I've made a free subtractive "synthesizer" using looped bits of me bowing my double bass as oscillators, then did one from cello samples, and did another bass one. And then later also did the same thing with a tuba and a baritone sax. You can get the bass/cello one here: Invalid Link Removed
The App Store shows no results with MS20.
With Korg it shows a couple of tutorials, Exploring volca bass is one of them.
You are right! They pulled it, too bad. It was called iMS-20 I am pretty sure.

Sanity check screen shot below. Just played it again. One of the best Apps I have ever seen on the iPad platform. While I could not find it in a search on the App store ( Apple is making a lot of changes lately ),
I found this link on Korg's website. $29 but in the opinion of many, worth every penny.

Handy that the app seems to have some sort of memory.
Other than that, most of what it delivers I have available in some sort of hardware.
So I don't really feel a need to acquire the software.
The ARP ODYSSEi app is also interesting though.
I bought an SQ-1 sequencer recently, which is good fun.
In the shop I noticed the Behringer Model D analog synthesizer module, that is a remake of the Minimoog Model D. It will cost you about 10% of a Moog Minimoog Model D remake.

Something to consider.
What comes in handy is that the SQ-1 can also drive a model D, the old Korg SQ-10 Analog Sequencer could only drive the MS series. A MS-02 Cv/trigger interface was needed to connect it to Moog types.
