Here in Germany there‘s a guy from the (also German) Bassic forum who developed the Vong-Filter HPF/LPF pedal. He offers them as DIY kit.

IME every bassist should use a compressor pedal.
+1I look at pedals as tools. If I am playing a song that needs a particular time, I use that effect. Often I am just straight into an amp or DI.

"Sometimes"I've never played a song that required any kind of dirt in the signal path and I've yet to watch a demo using one that made me think "I need one of those" and I've tried.
