I've tried a lot of configurations and a lot of preamps and I keep coming back to the BDDI v2. Yes, it has that scoop at 750/800hz, Treble is at 3.2khz (basically high mids), Presence is at 4.5/5khz, and it's boost only. The fact that I can switch the bass to 80hz (to make room for the kick drum) and the mids to 1khz (to accentuate that scoop at 800hz with another little scoop to make room for guitars and vocals or other instruments) is a deciding factor for me. Plus the harmonic saturation and that roll off at 35hz and 6khz are again crucial, because I can make the bass mix ready. With all these features it is present on more platinum recordings than all other bass preamps combined. From Pino Palladino, Tony Levin and Mike Porcaro, to Rex Brown, Sam Rivers and Fieldy, this SansAmp has been present on recordings and live, it has dominated the bass world for 3 decades.

Many people also talk about compressors or preamps that they want transparency, but I realized something, transparency is the enemy of music. Transparency does not put bass in the mix, transparency does not cut frequencies that clash with other instruments.

Initially I was a fan of Empress, for example, which is not exactly transparent (but quite transparent for a FET type circuit that partially succeeds in simulating the transparency of a VCA circuit), but I returned to Cali76 which makes a roll off in the lows and highs, pushes and harmonically saturates the mids and through that it sounds in the mix. Cali76 simply works magic in dense mixes, yes, I don't have the lows and highs of the Empress, Cali76 cuts, rounds, but gives density where it needs to, harmonically saturates, and psychoacoustics reconstructs it afterwards. And at the end, in the mix, the best part is, the sound seems bigger.

Many people associate transparency with studio tools and that's totally wrong, effects and studio tools are there for personality, not for transparency. Urei 1176, LA-2A, Distressor with Dist2 and Dist 3 (even and odd harmonics, i.e. tube and tape) are not transparent. Neither are Neve 5088 or 8068 consoles. Without even or odd harmonic distortions the sound has no life.

That's my opinion, that's why I'm not looking for transparency anymore, but for effects/pedals that put my bass in the mix without much effort on my part, in other words, effects that work for me in the mix, necessarily in the mix. What sounds great solo, usually doesn't work in the mix. The problem is people judge the BDDI (v1 and v2) as a preamp, when they should judge it as a 'mix-in-a-box'. There’s a reason this pedal is on more platinum records than all other bass preamps combined.

I went through many configurations (I fell into the myth of transparency too), I tried many variations, in the end I ended up configuring the pedalboard like this (but I'm also posting pictures with the variations):
  • TC Electronic PolyTune 3 Mini
  • Origin Effects Cali76 V2 Bass Compressor
  • Origin Effects DCX Bass Overdrive
  • Darkglass Microtubes X Ultra
  • Tech 21 SansAmp Bass Driver DI V2

I agree with you to a certain extent, especially on the importance of harmonics/saturation.

I don't think transparency is "an enemy of the music" though.

If I understood correctly, you are using the term "transparency" in two distinct ways: 1. flat frequency response, 2. lack of harmonics/saturation.

I generally prefer transparent pedals for longer signal chains. When I am running let's say 10 pedals in series, I don't want each of them to cut sub-lows or scoop mids. It would be too much. For longer signal chains, I prefer that each component plays it's role: compressor provides (transparent) compression, overdrive provides saturation, HPF cuts sub-lows etc. That way I am able to keep things under control.

I do support your case for short signal chains, and, especially, for all-in-one solutions.

BDDI is great because it does all the needed tone-shaping (EQ, harmonics, mild compression) in one box. The same applies to Aguilar Tone Hammer DI which I am using myself. Those a great tools. I am using THDI for gigs for which I am not bringing my pedalboard...and as a backup.

IMHO, every bass player would benefit having one of these...at least as a backup.

Today we have a lot more alternatives, that's true, plus musical tastes change. The Ampeg B15 is no longer the first thing a sound engineer thinks of, but that doesn't mean it wasn't among the things that worked for decades, and that's true of the SansAmp. It defined an era, just as Darkglass defines an era today.
 
Moreover, you are missing the point, it is not about SansAmp, but about "it is not good because it is scooped" or "this compressor affects my tone". the same as "it is transparent like a studio compressor". I mean, it is about these slogans that are circulating. Why did I bring SansAmp into the discussion, so as not to talk about the Holy Spirit, which no one has seen, that is, about something abstract, plus I realized that I like that preamp, this after I wasted a lot of money on alternatives that turned out to be not as useful.

Yes, Empress has that boost at 2khz and scoop at 500hz. And the worst part is, I still haven't heard it as well in a dense nu metal mix compared to Cali76. And you can see that I have two Empress compressors.
Maybe it works in less dense music.
But honestly, after recording several tracks with the two compressors, and after a long time considering that I like the Empress better because it has a wider Attack/Release range, in the mix I simply preferred the Cali76. Because I can hear my bass more clearly.
 
Lost me from the get-go with the idea of the Empress being transparent. Definitely has the flavor of having been written largely by AI. In particular, how much "fluency-driven overconfidence" (AI's own term for its writing style) there seems to be. I've been using AI a lot and it cracks me up how certain it can sound when it's telling me something that I know to be completely and utterly wrong.

I am, once again, asking you to share sources to add context to your firm, global assertions about SansAmp (and now, tangentially, Darkglass), 'defining an era.' An era of what? Rock music? Nu-Metal music? If the context you're speaking of SPECIFICALLY is NuMetal (which it appears it may be, based on the bassists you listed), then that is better, more concise context. Are you speaking of a particular engineer working in a particular genre who likes to use it as a no-questions-asked go-to?

While it may be accurate to say that the SansAmp BDDI is a well-established, renowned piece of gear that can do amazing things and is very useful, and has been around for close to 4 decades, there is literally no way to say that it 'defined an era' and has 'appeared on more platinum recordings than all other bass preamps combined' without more context. As a generalization with no qualifiers, and the prevalence of far better preamps and EQs in a proper studio, it doesn't make me believe your global assertion one bit.
