The whole or the part? Which is it for you?

I don't gig with a band or jam with people very often. Most of the time I hear a song with an interesting bass line and use that as the start of something that I end up playing. I rarely play the entire song all the way through, especially the repetitive quarter or eighth notes. For example, I just heard an interesting bass part from Bon Jovi's "Living on a Prayer" and started messing around with it. Are there any others on Talk Bass that do this? I think it helps me be more creative than just learning the songs by wrote.

My memory isn't good enough to learn by rote.
I'm similar, I'll find out an arrangement & then move it up & down the fretboard & then across the fretboard, & of course change it up as I go.
Once I spent a very long time on the riff from Dio's "Rainbow in the Dark". It's very simple, yet it held my attention for a long time, LOL!

I went back later and listened and watched someone play that bass part. What I ended up with was not the specific bass part that I originally listened to. Are there similarities? Some but it isn't the same part and would not fit directly into the original song. It does have a similar feel and vibe though.
