Double Bass The wife... (DB Forum thread)

I would tell her to STFU if she complains.
ok i'm going to go out on a limb here... you are not married? or if you are married, your wife just hasn't gotten around to phoning in that domestic abuse call yet? seriously though, don't ever talk to your partner like this if you want to keep said partner.

if your household is low on funds, don't buy that second bass... if your bases are covered (pun intended), your bills are paid, and you have money left over, budget some of it for music expenses, have your wife budget some for things she is interested in...

If you have the right partner they will understand you spending your H E cash on something you love and enjoy....if the bills are paid first. I of course am blessed with the most beautiful understanding and generally awesome gal in the world and she knows I wont blow loads of cash on numerous instruments so all is good. Also, is "the wife" such a derogatory term? Better than old ball and chain, battle ax, the dame, the broad, or toots no?

As a side note, I am always surprised at how many people have no hobbies at all. Lots of my friends who are great people have no real hobbies. Instead they spend their cash on drinks, smokes, junk food, whatever. I feel like I have too many hobbies and not enough time to do them all. So wouldn't the wife rather have you spending your bread on something constructive like music instead of the above? Good luck!

i think the electric folks need to also remember that a new electric is maybe 2000 for a real nice one. a new bass for me (when i upgrade, which will be sooner rather than later) is going to be around 20,000. It's a little bit harder to justify that amount to the missus (not that I personally have one to justify to). even a fully carved new bass from somewhere like upton is like, 6-7k, and while comparing basses is pretty impossible, it's a bit like buying a fender p or j- bass. not the cheapest bass around, but not a Sadowsky or other boutique bass guitar luthier either.

What I want to know is...

How do YOU justify more than one bass with the warden?

Well, I already had 3 of them whe we met. The other two I justified like this:

I want a new bass, cuz I want to learn to play fretless. Then, I want a new bass, cuz I want a fretless with 5 strings.
The next bass will be justified like so: I want a new bass.

edit: Hmm, didnt realize I ended up in the DB section. Meh, same applies if I wanted a double bass, in fact, I just told my fiancee that was next on my agenda the other day.

I play both and eb and db are not the same, the size alone could also be a problem. Also alot of eb's don't cost near as much as some of the db's do. There are also better reasons for having more than one DB, you can put a nice electric in a case etc. when not playing in a place where it could get damaged, not so for a DB

I dont think my wife would oppose.... but I think I'd have a guilty conscience having a second DB :).....

I've already got 3 E Basses... and she asked me the other day.... "er.... I've only seen you playing once on a gig with the DB.... but you play a lot more with the EB's....why?" I didnt want to go into the.....of course I'd rather play DB... but its a completely different story playing DB for 2-3 hours..... its too big and fragile to carry around... and if I take it along I wouldnt have space for the rest of the PA in my car and so on and so on..... so I just left it at that.

I am not sure I have any reason to chime in other then if you have to justify your purchase because of your money verses her money...that is a hard sell. In our home all money is "our money" and we tend to pull it together. For us pulling in the same direction with both our efforts works better then pulling in different directions. And like Leslie my husband never referred to me "as the wife". We are a team... It is much better for us, and this is after 26 years. Best wishes and hope it works out and you harmoniously acquire your back up bass.

I gave her one of the basses when she showed a little interest.

Seriously though, she's always encouraging me to get another one when I find one I like (and that we can afford).

We just bought a 1954 aluminum Larson. It's our first boat, bought on a whim 'cause it looked so cool when we drove by. Guess who egged me on about getting it? And she can't even swim. The "where am I gonna put another boat" problem makes the "where am I gonna put another bass" problem seem pretty small. ;)

A boating website I looked at had a "seven day plan to convince your spouse to buy a boat" that included all kinds of psychological pressure to get your S.O. to agree to your wishes. I thought it was a shame that people would feel it's OK to coerce someone they're supposed to love into something that they don't want to do. It's OK to honestly disagree about something. It's even OK to fight over it. It's not OK to purposely try to manipulate your wife.

Hi sweetie, I bought you some nice lingerie... :p

Genius. Pure, evil genuis.

why thank you sir. i have always been good with lie loop holes.

"why were you late to work?"
"my car wouldnt start." (because i didnt put the key in the ignition)

"why were you late to work?"
"my alarm didnt go off" (because i didnt set it)

and being with the same girl for 4 years, you need to get creative.

If you make enough of your income from playing, I would think the tax-deduction on another bass would justify it. If it's solely for hobby, and you comfortably have the finances for another bass, I don't see why a spouse in a healthy marriage would have a problem with it...?

I felt bad when my wife and I moved into our first apartment together, and my bass trunk took up a chunk of the living room. But then I looked in the closet, and didn't feel so bad anymore.
