The wiggles is an off-shoot from a band called "The Cockroaches". As the Cockroaches, they had several hits in Australia and became household names playing clean cut pop tunes (you could probably find some of their tunes on Kazza). They all met in college and all have degrees in primary school teaching (that's young kids). Once the Cockroaches had outlived it's usefulness, they spent several years touring Australia doing live shows and developed a reputation for being a silly but fun night out. My mates, who usualy like their music much louder, were hooked on their live shows. I was too busy gigging to ever catch a show for myself, but the general consensus in the industry was that these guys really, really knew how to read a crowd.

Then one day, without any warning, they release a kids album under the name "The Wiggles". They were a bit of a laughing stock at first and the common cry was "what on earth made them do that". Pretty soon the album was selling by the millions in Oz, a TV show followed, then a successful venture into Europe and the USA. They're all multi-millionairs now.

I got to meet them at last years ARIA awards (our Grammy's). They're great guys.

I think the first rule of kids shows should be "First, do no harm."

This would rule out the Teletubbies (the aforementioned language skills), the Rugbrats. and Spongebob. And have you seen the Boobahs ?(sp?) They are like the Teletubbies on a bad acid trip.

Not that all shows should be sappy, but it's an age thing. An eight or ten year old watching Sponge Bob is OK, but I think 4 is a little early. Bad behavior with no consequences.

I do like the Wiggles, but I can't stand them for long. But I have to remind myself I am not their target audience. They look silly pretending to play their instruments (especially when those instruments aren't in the song) but again I remind myself, at some point they DID play those songs. I've seen videos of their live shows, and man those guys get a workout!

And besides, any show that gets kids singing instead of babbling incoherently or smarting off gets a gold star in my book.

Three daughters here (6, 3 and 1). And we've been known to wiggle with the wiggles. I love the fact that my girls will sing the songs with the guys. I figure any exposure to music for the kids is good!

And yeah, I've found myself humming Captain Feathersword a few times...what of it?? :D
