The worst gig you DIDN'T play.....

In the late 70's, I did a sit-in gig with a big band in a large showroom (~700 people). The conductor liked what I did and asked me back the next night. I had to decline since I was already booked on another gig.

The night I didn't play with them, there was a fire and over 200 people died.

Wow. You were asked to play that night at the Beverly Hills Supper Club?

Wow. Just wow.

I had to look this up...I was 23 when it happened, but in a fairly secluded training program, so I had never even heard of it until now. I couldn't finish reading the articles online...what a horrible event! Your mother must have grieved terribly, until she heard your voice. I'm glad you missed that gig!

Beverly Hills Supper Club in Northern Kentucky?
I was a youngster back then but remember it well. Was you gonna be in the band for John Davidson?

That’s the one.

The director got out, but went back in for the sheet music, was overcome with smoke and died.
Terrible Tragedy, property is still sitting up there empty, little things from the club lying around. The mob story about them doing it sounds about right, don't think they planned for it to happen while the place was packed. They destroyed the evidence before it could be investigated probably, by ripping it down almost immediately.

When I was like 19-20, (2001-2002ish) my band was asked to open for my friend's band. At that point we had maybe played 2 gigs total, and we were excited to have the opportunity. We had never seen the place, it was in a city about a half hour from where we live. We loaded up all our equipment in my Dad's truck, and drove there. We followed the directions we were given, and ended up in the poopiest part of the ghetto. We were kind of scared even driving down the streets. Then as well came upon the bar in question, it was nasty, run down, really rough looking place, in a really questionable neighborhood, with some really questionable characters outside. We just kinda rolled on by, got some Steak'n'Shake, and went back home. Turns out, the other band never even showed up for some reason,. I regret nothing!
