The Yamaha TRBJP2 on a whim?

I've been through some heavy emotional stuff lately (death of soul mate and fall out from family), and decided to part with a fair chunk of change on a bass. I wanted something to be more on the ultra expressive side of bass, but not going too far into the boutique rabbit hole. I, while a mite bit influenced by alcohol, decided on a Yamaha TRBJP2. I rarely buy a bass that I don't try first. But I figured with a Yam, the overall quality would at least be consistent. I went with Amber (natural?) rather than the red that JP himself uses. It's a 6er. This bass is not heavily reviewed on the internet, so if anyone can chime in.....great.

Any thoughts?

I'm sorry to hear about the issues that you're having to deal with, my thoughts go out to you.

As far as the JP2 goes, all I can say is that everyone I've ever met that had one liked is a lot. I do have a Nathan East BB and I can say that Yamahas at this level are top-notch, grade-A instruments. You will be hard pressed to find something nicer.

Check out some Chick Corea electric band on youtube with Patitucci playing and you'll get to see it in action and he's such a great player.

I didn't know the model, but looking at it it looks great!

I have a soft spot for Yamaha, I own and have owned a bunch of their stuff (audio, bikes, cars) although I have never had a Yamaha bass.

I will say that Yamaha quality is always good, no matter what the item. It is not usually the "best", but it is always worth the price!

The latest Nathan East was one possibility as well for me. It shares some features with the jp2, such as those nice pearloid tuning keys. In reality, I'd probably be better off relative to my current playing situation with the Nathan East 5er. It's just that I felt like I wanted an instrument to go off on solo style. The jp2 will be my first 6 string. If I don't like it, I shouldnt lose a lot of money on a resale. I do weird things, I've been talking about a Dingwall forever, and here I am with the Yam coming. The Dingwall in my future is most likely a 5er. Next on lust list might be a Mike Lull 4 J style. I doubt I'll ever get to audition any of these types of basses without getting on a plane. We shall see if I'm helped out by the Jp2. Musical instruments are not the worst thing you can purchase. There always seems to be a market, and you dont usually take huge losses. I suppose some customs without a name would be tricky investment wise though.

Hey man,
I came across this post because I recently got one of these Basses. I really like it. How are you doing? I wanted you to know I was moved by your post and will be in prayer for you even though it is from some time ago. I know things can’t fix hearts but can be a diversion. God fixes hearts. Hope your doing well friend.

I owned a JP2 for a few years and just recently sold it because it was a little too much for me, weight-wise and in terms of the mass and body of the neck. However, they are fine instruments with excellent craftsmanship and a lot of bang for buck. The 26 fret neck is a really cool aspect, extending the upper register even further.

I felt that the electronics were maybe not the greatest, so I replaced the stock preamp with an Aguilar OBP-3, which imparted a lot more punch and clarity and enhanced the beautiful piano-like quality of the bass. I kept the stock pickups in, as they are fine - with the exception of the convex shape that can result in the C string being a little weak output-wise relative to the other strings. That can be mitigated obviously by raising the pickups on the treble side.
