The ZOOM H4 recorder

Anyone used it? I'm curious about the sound quality. One can be had for only $250 from some stores, so I am very very interested.

If anyone has sound bytes that would be great. Thanks!

I'm a big fan of the Zoom H4--definitely a purchase well made. Even the onboard mics sound great. It's really handy to record live gigs with fast setup time, or to do the portable sampling projects I do.

It's a great device.

Pros- Inexpensive, feature rich (record multiple resolutions) 4 tracks, mike modeling, effects builtin. Sounds terrific especially using great quality external mikes

Cons - plastic feeling, cheap switches, small display.

I've been seriously considering one of these for a little while now, and just have one question:

How many tracks can you record in real time? I see there's two inputs, so can you record the two inputs to two seperate tracks while also getting a stereo recording from the onboard mics to a 3rd track?

No, you can either record from the onboard stereo mic or either/both of the inputs.

But you can just keep laying down tracks, and once you're at the four track limit, you can mix it down to one track and continue adding tracks.

Excellent recording functions and an easy interface. It sounds great as either a stereo mic or 4-track plus it features a good selection of guitar and bass amp simulators as well as vocal and studio effects. Although the overall durability may be an issue. It's made mostly of plastic and the buttons and jog wheel feel very fragile. Still one of the best pieces of equipment I've ever bought.

they are real rough takes of songs in progress. Not meant to be 'final releases' by any stretch. The H2 is a sketch pad used in writing / improving the stuff.

I recorded these set to 4 mic stereo file... the highest MP3 bit rate it'll record.
